Hey-o! I'm a linux user and am thinking of picking up a laptop so that I can work on the couch or travel with it instead of being tethered to my desktop all of the time....
thank you for the recommendations. I'm fine with swapping OS's so even just compatible would work. The world seems awash in a million diffrrent laptops so it is a bit overwhelming!
If you like transport related games, I encourage you to give it a try. I've sunk a lot of time into this game usually playing with mods. You can find it at https://www.openttd.org/
Gonna just list the ones that really jumped out to me:
Event Horizon; Bladerunner & Bladerunner 2049; Pacific Rim; Johnny Mnemonic; Stalker; Solaris (1972); Robocop; Starship Troopers; Dredd; Tetsuo the Iron Man; Crimes of the Future; Pandorum; Fifth Element; Southland Tales
I’ve got Jellyfin up and running right now on a DS620Slim NAS and it’s running pretty good so far. I’ve seen a lot of people say they prefer Plex over Jellyfin. What are the main advantages to plex?
Yes this has been asked and answered a million times I’m sure. There is a plethora of ‘top ten distros for Linux gaming’ lists out there and the majority of posts I can find on That Other Site seem to devolve into “every distro can do games”....
I recommend Fedora. It's rock solid while also having really up-to-date packages coming often. Not bleeding edge but deffo leading edge. Also has a decent amount of info online when you hit an issue.
I used to use Ubuntu but the older packages, and Canonical with their obsession with SNAP and becoming a baby Microsoft kept me away.
Arch is a good option and TONS of information online for help (some of the best) but it is a bit more DIY and is a rolling release so very up-to-date package but keep clear of Manjaro, just do base Arch. The folk managing it keep dropping the ball so not worth the headache
I am currently running a megadungeon in a FOSS roleplaying game called Basic Fantasy RPG and it's been a blast. I tend to lean heavily into the Old School Revival/New School Revival end of adventure gaming, a lot of focus on simple rules and heavy focus on narrative interaction with the environment, survial horror elements, and Combat as War. Just started reading Liminal Horror rpg and getting ideas for some one-shots for the coming spooky season
I found it complicated at first (didn't know which instance "will last", where to register to not lose anything when instance admin decide to turn it down), but now it's going good. We are missing mobile apps though....
On Kbin and I'm enjoying it and really enjoying the ability to access everything on Lemmy too! Drives home the usefulness of this sort of thing being federated, brings everyone together rather than silo'd off. Agree with the app mention. Fingers crossed that kbin.social keeps chugging along with the hug of death happening!
Recommend me a linux compatible laptop please

Mike Halac aka The Mantuar has passed away (en.m.wikipedia.org)
Only 55 years old, this business needs to do a better job of stopping these tragedies.
