I have a feeling it won't be the same as on reddit in a few years. Reddit became pretty bad after the facebook exodus and I can't even remember what caused it. On reddit, everything is concentrated on one "instance", but on the fediverse, it'll hopefully become much more spread out. And once users on lemmy and kbin can block instances (just like on mastodon), then I bet things will be different.

I decided to do a bit of a dive into this platform, and while I think it is an interesting idea, I am yet to find a space on Lemmy where I am welcome. I am an artist. I have a Patreon that pays my bills and puts food on the table. Generally, I give the majority of my stuff away for free to the community, but that usually comes...
This isn't the only instance. You have a bunch more and maybe one maybe OK with linking to patreon. It's probably easier than creating your own instance.
Btw, if you want an instagram alternative that's on the fediverse, try out pixelfed

I can't wait for videos from the fediverse to start popping up. I wonder whether lemmy will build in an integration to allow comments directly on the fediverse video or if it will create a new thread that's separate from it. Hopefully the former as it would make it so much better...
There have been a few voices talking about adding ads to kbin. To those, I'd like to say they are probably not necessary. Mastodon is doing fine with donations (28k+/month and they do need more)...
Yes please! discourse isn't bad, but what it has been lacking for years is a proper thread view. I feel like companies having their own instances would get rid of them using centralized stuff like reddit and only having one forum. Also, having the possibility to federate with the rest of the fediverse without the need create official accounts on separate services should be great.
I'd love to be able to use one account to comment on AMD's help forum, as well as https://linuxrocks.online/@TUXEDOComputers (will it be converted to a proper fediverse link? I wonder...), https://mastodon.technology/@kde (for the slimbook), purism, etc. Right now, I need a separate discourse account for each -_-
It’s disappointing to see some of the larger subreddits going public with a ‘what’s the point?’ tone. Most are staying private, but some aren’t. What do ads have to do with it? Once @ernest sets up a donation page that allows automated, periodic donations, it should be fine. Look at mastodon. They're pulling 28k/month in donations from patreon alone. Lemmy and kbin are the two biggest contenders for a reddit replacement on the fediverse imo and it's quite possible they'll get bigger than mastodon (personal feeling).
They won't need ad money and if they ever do switch, I can bet you it won't play well with the community.
