The only thing I'm afraid of is that they'll turn it around before the majority truly understands how bad it is. It'll be just like COVID: the bad times won't last long enough for people to change. They'll just think "it's temporary" and not change a damn thing.
At least in FLOSS communities they are willing to actually implement solutions to fix problems, so there's hope. Large corps don't care until it hurts their wallet.
Is Apple going to make a Mastodon server? I think that'd be pretty cool. In Apple fashion, it would require an app only available on iPhone and Mac, and this app wouldn't be able to connect to third party instances....
I'm not sure I understand China's reactions here... if nothing happened, then why not just let them congregate and "remember" something that supposedly didn't happen? What's the harm? If they were blocking traffic or riots were involved, it would understandable to want to stop it, but if it's peaceful, where's the harm? Unless of course, something did happen that they want people to forget...
With forewarning about a huge influx of users, you know Lemmy.ml will go down. Even if people go to https://join-lemmy.org/instances and disperse among the great instances there, the servers will go down....
Is it running in a single docker container or is it spread out across multiple containers? Maybe with docker-machine or kubernetes with horizontal scaling, it could absorb users without issue - well, except maybe cost. OVH has managed kubernetes.
flattr was on the right track, but didn't know how to do it right. Reddit, discord, and free-to-play games figured it out: let people pay for visuals, status, and exclusivity.
visuals = skins, themes, sets, icons, merch - make it flashy and people will buy it
status = "biggest contributor", "biggest tipper", "most active poster", "I paid for this icon saying I'm better than all of you"
exclusivity = one time access pass to a face to face interview with the devs, limited community access, access to pre-lease of some feature, ...
None of it has to be actually functional. It just has to make people feel better (than others) and you can make bank without ads.
@QasimRashid What I find difficult is: how can the US change? Short of a revolution, what is a realistic way to change the constitution to get rid of first past the post (which is the root of all these problems)?
As you may have heard, Reddit’s decided to pull a Twitter and start charging an extortionate amount of money for access to their previously-free API, in order to drive third-party clients like Apollo and RIF into extinction. Under Reddit’s proposed pricing, …
