25 years in open source communities, desktop is my first love. Currently community manager for oneAPI. I work for Intel.

Preparing to watercool this "mining-special" MI50. The graphite thermal pad is a nightmare, extremely difficult to fully remove, and you get conductive dust everywhere. I cleaned the package with a brush, IPA and compressed air, hopefully the GPU isn't going to explode after I reapply power... :woozy_baa:

sri,

@niconiconi neat - what's the end result of it? I suppose you don't use oneAPI at all right?

@p

sri,

@niconiconi in my last job, I worked on open hardware and we were doing open designs for some of our products. We were working on a under the desk form factor - the specs are actually on github. (I didn't do the work, a friend/colleague did) Sadly the company was sold to another company and they shut down our division.

@fulkrum

sri,

What happened with reddit is that they've decided to go IPO and it's a different thing when you are a publicly traded company - that's usually when they go down the road of evil. Everything is about investor value - adn a lot of those investors are other large corporations or very rich individuals and they are as far as I'm concerned sociopathic.

sri,

What usually happens is that companies will come in and try to do value add. Look at mastodon, you got Facebook/Meta and other companies trying to come in and join the fediverse. They'll bring the numbers and their value add - that's where the extension will come in. You will need people you can trust to in activitypub circles who can make sure that they are only focused on managing the standard without a ton of politics - but once Big Money comes in - a slow degradation begins.

This is an initial welcome post! I’m running an experiment - as the community manager for oneAPI - I’m looking to see how easy it would be to build a discussion forum here.

If you are interested in joining our discussion group and talk about oneAPI (https://oneapi.io/) hit the join button and get involved! :-)

Lots of great conversations to be had.

Hey, I see it is customary to toot an so here I go.

In my spare time I cosplay as a sysadmin in my homelab, experiment with electronics and modular synthesis, and sometimes write some code. Mostly though I’m on the sofa watching stuff or gaming.

Over the last decade I’ve worked for Codeplay Software implementing OpenCL, Vulkan, and SPIRV among other things. I was also a Khronos rep in the Vulkan WG around the 1.0/1.1 releases. Nowadays I’m working on SYCL internals.

sri,

@infektor nice! :) I' the oneapi community manager :)

Intel's Arc graphics cards have quietly become excellent (www.digitaltrends.com)

"Intel’s Arc A770 and A750 were decent at launch, but over the past few months, they’ve started to look like some of the best graphics cards you can buy if you’re on a budget. Disappointing generational improvements from AMD and Nvidia, combined with high prices, have made it hard to find a decent GPU around $200 to $300...

sri,

oneAPI community manager here - you should join us on our discord server. :-) There is also a kbin oneapi community if you're interested. Can give you the link at your request.

I’m looking for a website that will let me choose my new video card, eg I want AV1 support, my power supply is whatever it is so X max watts, and so on to help me pick a few options?

If people are porting, I would love to know - interested in hearing pain points especially if you're porting from CUDA. We have some tutorials and an upcoming hackathon to help port from CUDA. Let me know if you're interested! (I'm the oneAPI community manager)

Mesa now almost fully supports OpenCL 3.0 and SPIR-V... Now the question is: when will Mesa support SYCL too to save us from the crappy AMD ROCm driver so we can finally start writing modern cross-platform GPU code... :woozy_baa:

sri,

@niconiconi Greetings, you should come to our meetup this coming friday! We have Karol Herbst, Mesa developer and co-maintainer of Nouveau talking about SYCL and openCL - check it out here - https://www.meetup.com/oneapi-community-us/events/294379731/?isFirstPublish=true

sri,

@niconiconi

@ignaloidas

Perhaps I can help? What are you working on? I'm the oneAPI community manager and an Intel employee. Also, please feel free to post questions on SYCL and oneAPI at https://kbin.social/m/oneapi_community - I will try to monitor it there and help when I can.

Corporate at its worst: controls the library and its , and backend. provides rocThrust, that is just Thrust with the CUDA part stripped and a new backend for / . Nobody* is working on a backend for
provides its own alternative as , which is NOT a drop-in replacement.

This is why we can't have nice things.

@sri - I created a kbin community around oneapi if you're interested - https://kbin.social/m/oneapi_community
