How did you get into anime?

Although my first anime was back during early childhood (back when anime programme block was a regular thing in Indonesian television). Vulcan just really started following anime seriously during junior high school back in 2012 (classmates are into Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online during that time, and we often chatted about latest anime airing during class break. A friend was also into osu! and we played together).

So, kbin anime, how did you get into anime? Share your story here.

The earliest anime I remember watching was Grand Prix or something, but fully got into the fandom with Spice and Wolf. Came for the wolf girl, stayed for the good story (and the wolf girl).

Jetix had dubbed episodes of Naruto that I would always watch, but (I think?) they ran out of dubbed so they kept replaying the chuunin exam arc. Child me needed to know what happened, I googled it, and that was the gateway!

I would watch Pokémon, DBZ, and such as a kid but in 2001 at 14 years of age I watched Neon Genesis and thus began a life long love affair with anime proper

spazahedron,

Battle of the Planets back in the 70s .. basically a reworked Gatchaman for the U.S. market. I think it was on local TV right after Scooby-Doo.

My friend and I were sorta making fun of it in 2016.

And he said that he'd watch one episode of an anime (rezero) to see how bad it was. And like 2 minutes in he's like, "wtf this is really good" and I watched it and agreed.

And now its still my favorite anime to this day! :)

My friends and I somehow got hooked on the Natuto manga back in school. After that I watched the Anime and really enjoyed the medium, so I stuck with it

curiousPJ,

First time I saw anything anime was in South Korea, It was like maybe 1997? TV broadcasts used to end sometime after sunset those days. And I had just caught a little glimpse of a mecha fight scene. Didn't know what it was. I wasn't even aware of 'anime'. But something about that scene got stuck in the back of my head.

It wasn't until maybe when Bleach was in its invade soul society arc that I got an interest in Anime but quickly got tired of the filler arcs.

Soul Eater is what got me really hooked onto the genre. Started that desire to find what my memory was and finally search out for what was 'in-season'.

That scene I had in my mind for a decade at this point was from Escaflowne. Where Van is shown physically interfacing with Escaflowne, so it could have been any episode at that point.

I’m not super into anime (I watch on rare occasions if I really like one) but I was introduced early to mid 2000s on Adult Swim. Animes like Inuyasha, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, etc

LuckyKitty,

6th grade, a friend of mine essentially forced me to sit down with him and watch Death Note. Was hooked ever since. Got way more into it than he ever was- I think he regrets the weebish monster he created, haha.

In the 90's was the peak of anime in Latin America so they aired a lot of anime old and new (new as in at the time) it was impossible not to become a fan and/or Otaku

In the early aughties I came across an AMV of Princess Mononoke set to Loreena Mckennit'd Dante's Prayer and I was like, whoa, what is this animation! Individual leaf shadows!? Cute wolf girl? I had to know more!

Fired up Direct Connect and found Mononoke and the rest of the big ghiblis, then I started going through a lot of series that were big at the time. Off the top of my head I remember Noir, the first .hack//sign, lain FLCL and trigun.

The big shounen anime started soon after, and while I don't watch anime quite so religiously these days I still catch a show or two per season.

I'm from the Philippines and the same as most millennials it's growing up watching Dragonball, and those a bit late to the party would be Naruto. Side note but my sexual awakening was Ranma 1/2 lol.

As a kid I was first introduced to anime by watching DBZ and Hunter X Hunter (1999 edition) on TV. But I didn't consider it anime at the time, I thought of them as cartoons as they were being played dubbed in my native language.

Once upon a time in a LAN party I gave some videos to a guy via SMB shares and as a thank you he gave me the first season of Naruto in Japanese with subtitles... That's when I found out the term Anime which helped me search for Anime streaming websites. Several years later I've watched over hundreds of anime and I'm a pretty much an Isekai junkie. It can be generic as heck yet I still consume it, though lately I've been growing kinda tired and I've transitioned to reading Manwha instead (Tower of God was my gateway).

I was like 12 when Naruto started airing in the US and I was enthralled. The Last Airbender had finished airing around the same time and I figured Naruto would be similar, but at the time I never knew "cartoons" could be violent or even what a seasonal plot structure was. Everything I knew prior was episodic.

My sister used to watch YouTube videos back when the platform had minimal moderation. During that time, she came across a series called "Assassination Classroom," which piked my interest as well. Still one of my favorites.
