@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon After 6 years of living in FL, I had to put Waffle House on the banned foods list (along with Krispy Kreme donuts). I know this will make me a pariah y'all BUT health needs come first. And after I heard the cashier (when the cash register was down) say that she couldn't work a calculator because she didn't go to college (True story!)...I was just like...I can't do this anymore.
Everything in moderation. When I lived there, at most, once a week but actually more like once a month
I don't have any near me now but I've learned that healthy eating ain't as hard and strict as most make it out to be. I can still eat one trash meal a week and I'm healthier now than ever. Just had to learn more specifics/ numbers about healthy nutrition, not vague groups of foods and habits
@BigAngBlack@fulanigirl@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon Hard agree. I recently started tracking how I eat to ensure I was getting what I needed to support my workout routine, and it comes down to managing calories to support your lifestyle.
Mostly, I still eat whatever I want, i.e., cookies, pizza, ice cream, etc., but as long it fits my nutrition requirements, it's all good.
The only major change I've made is portion size. Instead of eating half a pack of cookies, I eat two, three, and I'm good. Even on the days I go over a bit it's not a big deal because your body will give you some grace if your habits are overall good.
@Are0h
I briefly had a personal trainer years ago, she gave me macros targets, big jumping off point to understanding where I'd been going wrong, and my progress was immediate. Took maybe a month to shift my diet but once i did, everything worked
Macros she gave me for my activity levels at the time:
200g carb
170g protein
70g fat
@BigAngBlack Yup, that's close to mine as well. A trainer I was talking to about nutrition gave me the same advice: track your macros because once you get in the habit of it, it's actually pretty easy.
But I'm right there with you. It changed my relationship with food in the best way possible.
@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon Oh I don't give up. I'm a life long African dancer, to this day, but your body does what it does and arthritis, change in the depth perception and center of gravity are real for older people. That guardian story while lovely, won't keep a body from aging.
Also, things hit us out of nowhere when we're aging. I didn't expect to get bone density results showing deterioration on levels ppl much older get. I hike several times a week, wearing 2 leg braces & use a cane. I have post polio, scoliosis & osteoporosis. I take good care of myself & exercise more than most able bodied ppl. Some health conditions will stop determined ppl from doing what they love & it's not their fault whatsoever.
@BigAngBlack@fulanigirl@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon Many times, if you have a few underlying conditions or progressive illnesses - it's not as easy. Many folks in that category aren't usually given the help/support needed to be able to adapt without serious complications & help from medical folks with empathy & compassion.
I think we need to be mindful of what advice we give online, when we don't know what other, older folks are dealing with, medically. It can come across as condescending.
@msquebanh@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon This is true. But for clarity...I was not offended nor did I think it condescending. I'm all for old folks staying active but it isn't as easy as it may look. Shameless plug: see #abolition series on lack of access to neighbor amenities.
@fulanigirl@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon I appreciate your voice. I was upset seeing the exchange because it reminded me a lot about ableism ignorance by well meaning folks. I had to speak up because I was sure that a few others probably felt similar feelings & many folks are scared to post what they really feel.
@msquebanh@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon Got you, but its also necessary not to unnecessarily jump on folks who are just younger and expressing what they know. We have to be kind to each other ...until the folding chair needs to come out ! 😆
@fulanigirl@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon I didn't think you were arguing or debating. I only saw you, trying to speak from your own experiences. I speak from my own & also witnessed experiences. I believe in being openly honest about all of that - helps us to bridge differences & develop more empathy.
@BigAngBlack@fulanigirl@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon Thank you for clarification. It wasn't very clear on your comparison toot. I was given similar comparisons by folks without any disabilities or underlying health conditions & it harmed me more than helped. I needed empathy & not judgments. Especially when I've done almost everything possible to be proactive with personal health. We can sometimes do our very best but shit happens anyways.
100%
I used to play basketball and I'm probably gonna be dealing with knee pain for the rest of my life from high school. Plus a previously ruptured Achilles and ankle injury, not yet 40. Close, but not yet.
@BigAngBlack@fulanigirl@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon Ok - then - very confused about why you felt the need to throw up comparisons when it wasn't actually necessary. Please think over all of this. It's an opportunity to learn from each other.
@msquebanh@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon
So...not to drag this out, but people experience injury and illness in different ways. If the disability community is not open to hearing about how younger folks think about their bodies that is a problem. It's not ableism when he says he has an injury that impacted him. And it's not a comparison to what you are talking about. He is talking about his experience in a conversation with me, that in no way disregards your experiences..
@fulanigirl@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon The disability community INCLUDES youths. Again. Not understanding why you're trying to speak for someone who already has spoken to me & we've found peaceful resolution.
You're moving into colonized behaviours & I'm unsure if you recognize that?
@fulanigirl@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon I don't think I ever said his injury wasn't serious. I don't actually understand why you're doing codependent stuff - he can speak for himself & he has.
@BigAngBlack@fulanigirl@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon Please NEVER try to compare your basketball injury with ppl living with progressive illnesses that isn't their fault/personal choice. That is very colonial behaviour. Please recognize that & cease from doing it in future. Thank you.
@BigAngBlack@msquebanh@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon
My son is in his 40's and insists on playing ball with young people in their 20's. 😆 The stories he tells of getting out there and trying to hang are hilarious.
@BigAngBlack@fulanigirl@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon Also, I'm unsure of how old you are but age & the realities of deterioration in health is not usually recognized by many folks, until their own bodies & minds start deteriorating, despite all hard efforts to prevent it. It is a privilege to grow old & still smile.
I wish we could actually honour aging & support people better as their minds/bodies naturally age. There is huge learning opportunities there - for aging person & ppl around them.
@BigAngBlack@fulanigirl@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon As you grow older, unfortunately you're going to face ageism & worse. That is due to all of us living in a sick society that doesn't care much about marginalized folks. It is another after effect of colonial craptalism.
@fulanigirl@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon I used to incorporate 3 sets of 50 crunches into my workout routine. I severely injured my tailbone at 65 by doing this. My body just couldn’t do it anymore. I still work out every day, but I’ve never fully recovered from that injury. (Physical therapy didn’t help, but there has been some improvement over time.)
@MissPixiePancake@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon
Yeah we are just old! I accept it and it doesn't destroy my love for those who can keep it up. But trust me...as my friend in Oakland says...at a certain point its a war going on there with aging and everyday a new battlefront opens. I have found this to be the truth. We are still fighting, but we gotta pick battles now .
@fulanigirl@BigAngBlack@BlackMastodon@blackmastodon I do agree with learning to eat healthier & eating diet specific to your personal body needs. I just don't agree with making comparisons without considerations for other health issues. I grow a lot of my own foods because it's healthier. I went back to full traditional diet because my body/mind feels better on that cultural specific diet. I recommend ppl find what works for their body best & invest more in their personal health.
The Why
Inspired by the Montgomery, AL Riverfront Brawl, I just remembered all the late nights/early mornings witnessing the culture of one of The South's most celebrated and iconic social hubs. And fantastic shitty food
@BigAngBlack Again, hell, yes. Have they added a new one in the last few years to scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, topped, diced, capped, and peppered?
