@GottaLaff I agree. I only use dog food from one of the big five manufacturers that have not been associated with DCM. If you're going to feed a homemade diet, you really need the advice of a qualified veterinary nutritionist.
@GottaLaff Our vet recommended a diet with grain for our 11 yo dog who has a mild cardiac arrythmia (it's not DCM). She reviewed and approved the ingredients of the food we chose and specifically said pea protein should be avoided.
@GottaLaff Well shit. I’m going to have to find something new for Neko. It took ages to find food that wouldn’t give her diarrhea after a week or two, and Go brand (made in Canada) finally seemed to do the trick. Her food ingredients: “De-boned turkey, turkey meal, tapioca, peas, lentils, chickpeas…”. Sigh.
@GottaLaff My wonderful #veterinarian always asks: What are you feeding your #dogs? Are you feeding a grain-free food? ... Tl;dr: Cornell's Cohen advises owners to steer clear of any pet foods that have these listed in the top 10 ingredients:
Peas.
Lentils.
Chickpeas.
Potatoes or sweet potatoes.
This was a great article. Thanks for sharing.
We have a geriatric dog (she’s 13) who was diagnosed with mitral valve insufficiency (not DCM) only recently. Our vet was a bit concerned about her grain free diet, but we don’t have a lot of options because she has a rare gluten-linked seizure disorder. Our next pup will be fed a different diet though, because you never know which dogs will be susceptible. #dogs
One of the neighborhood women told me that she had killed her dog from a fad diet, but I still had my doubts since details were short. Something about lack of meat protein and grains.
@GottaLaff
My guys would never touch any of the so called "natural" foods; noses up just walked away. My vet tried to tell me to feed them the brand they carry in the office, yeah right, the old net me a profit scheme. My guys prefer Purina Pro Plan and I prefer the company with the experience of 130 years feeding animals.
@GottaLaff I give my dogs grain free kibble, but I add a half cup of my own mix - Pearl Barley, Yam/sweet potato, Kale/Chard/Collards(changes) and Ground beef or roasted chicken.
Made this batch last night - will last about four days.
@GottaLaff Yeah, i stopped giving peas a long time ago. Lentils are good fiber and when we have leftovers I'll mix a little in - but it's a rare thing.
These articles need to be circulated periodically though, I agree.
@GottaLaff
Started making this about 12 years ago when I had an overweight cattle dog - he lost over 20lbs and got real fit while an older collie actually put on weight. Banjo (cattle) and Fozzie - they were good boys.
