Elon Musk’s X tried and failed to make its own copyright system, judge says

Judge rules copyright law governs public data scraping, not X’s terms.

@arstechnica If I was Stack Overflow I would be very worried about what this ruling means: "X Corp. wants it both ways: to keep its safe harbors yet exercise a copyright owner’s right to exclude, wresting fees from those who wish to extract and copy X users’ content," Alsup wrote.

If Stack Overflow wants to argue their terms of service override the copyright ownership of their users, then they better get ready to say goodbye to Section 230 protections.

The majority of images they post, especially these types of image only posts, never include alt text. It seems odd to me that an organization dedicated to coalition building seems to intentionally want to exclude over 7 million Americans with vision loss or blindness.

Okay, so something that been living rent-free in my head today: a woman I know is distraught because she’s 37-years-old and doesn’t think she’ll find a man with small toes.

And small toes are a dealbreaker for her.

But for the life of me… aren’t all toes small? I really am empathetic towards her. I just don’t understand how small a small toe is.

EDIT: Oh yeah, this ideal man has to have big feet and small toes. Size 12 and higher. But this big footed man must have small toes.

@ethicaldetergent@drupal.community avatar

Is there any documentation out there for implementing a ”dark site” in Drupal? Not a dark theme, but rather a site that’s on standby and has a way to quickly switch over to it? Maybe it could use a better name, like failover site. It’s a question that came up in the the day job, but this would be something we here at Ethical Detergent would want to document for the community. https://devrix.com/tutorial/every-website-needs-a-dark-site-functionality/

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@ethicaldetergent Are you looking for a site that is identical to the replaced site? Or just a temporary site? The switch over is simply a DNS change, so not really Drupal. But keeping two codebases, file repositories and DB’s in sync is a different matter. That said, there are lots of ways to recreate that wheel.

More evidence AI is a bubble: Companies have stopped asking themselves whether new features and products empower their customers to achieve anything meaningful.

Instead, features and products are viewed through a single lens: “How well does this feature or product act as a conduit for marketing generative AI, lifting our prospects through hope?”

Exhibit 1: The attached image doesn’t actually show use cases: These are hand-wavey overgeneralized business functions. It’s not falsifiable.

1/2

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@raganwald Notice which “use case” isn’t listed? Executive decision making. When a company finally outsources their C suite to AI, then and only then will I believe their AI hype.

When I say there's more work to do, and that the model we've been using for the social web, pioneered by Twitter and before that the blogosphere, is not the right model for "working together."

What we think of as community is mostly spam.

http://scripting.com/2024/04/16/140810.html?title=workingTogether

Archnemysis, (edited )
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@davew “ChatGPT is that it's always up for working with you” - this is only true in the sense that slaves were always up for working for the slave master. There is no collaboration or working together with AI. There is no back-and-forth. The AI is not thinking or taking your ideas and changing their perspective or providing feedback to you to help change your perspective. It’s simply prompt and response.

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@davew but I think even more than that, the phrase really should be: ChatGPT is always up for working with you and working against others unseen. You indicate the “cost” is $20 per month, but that is only the direct cost to you. The indirect cost to actual other humans that have created the art that your “collaborator” stole to produce the image for you, is completely unseen. That theft is not collaboration. There is no working together when AI companies steal output from actual humans.
