I'm failing trying mitxela's trick of wrapping a wire around an ironbit for SMD soldering, any one got any ideas? This is a traditional 25W Antex iron it's wrapped on, but it's not getting hot enough on the wire, it boils off flux, melts low-melting point paste but doesn't do anything to existing components:

Winni,

@penguin42 you dont have enough mass, tip cools down too fast. There are solder tips available for this kind of work, like the third from left. Maybe you are better off with one of these

@Winni Yeh just bought myself some finer ones.

@penguin42 Considered a heat gun?

@wyliecoyoteuk Not for a repair on a board with other stuff.

@penguin42 Small heat guns are apparently meant for that usage.
I have a gas powered soldering iron with a heat gun head, that I use mainly for heatshrink.

@penguin42 There's hardly ever any need for a tip that fine. You can probably just use the iron as is. What are you trying to solder?

@mansr 0.2mm pitch connector (which I've never tried before, my chances are very very slim, but I'm just playing with this wire trick on a scratch board first)

@penguin42 That's a fine pitch indeed. Still, as long as there's nothing else in the way, you should be able to solder it with a 1.5 mm chisel tip or similar. Use good solder, but not too much, and be generous with the flux.

@penguin42
The wire is a bit thin, do you happen to have a ~1.5mm copper wire?

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@yrabbit Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have a look; I doubt I've got any tinned that wide, I might be able to find some solid mains cable or something.

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@yrabbit So I did try that, but first 1.5mm wire doesn't want to spiral easily, but then the second problem is trying to file the wire back down to a point.

@penguin42 @yrabbit I don't know the back story here. I presume you don't want to file the iron itself?

I presume buying a soldering iron with a small tip is also no fun.

So can you determine if it is the thermal conductivity of the wire limiting the heat transfer? Then just make the last bit of that spiral shorter.

If it is heat transfer into the wire you could try coating the wire and tip in solder. Or did you already?

Do you have a higher wattage iron?

@poleguy @yrabbit I just bought some finer tips.
