Cryptocurrencies are good because mining for coins ties up resources that could otherwise be used in building a humanity-destroying AI.

Took old laptop from a drawer. Booted and it has the same problem as many Arm SBC: WiFi is from Broadcom.

So if there will be "I want to still use it" then I need to find other minipcie card for it.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@hrw Would this be of any use?

@revk Probably depends on what the drones are being kept away from.

@argv_minus_one Please tell us the whole other story about dark mode. I'm listening!

@clacke @argv_minus_one Dork mode is fad that surges into popularity every 15 or so years, just like Rubik's cube or the mullet haircut. After a while, everybody realises that it actually looks rather silly, and it fades away until a new generation of nerds discovers it and the cycle repeats.

me, ordering from whole foods online: "how does amazon have such a crappy search engine and yet they own half the planet????"

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@brooke Because they can deliver almost anything next day and their customer service is excellent.

The raspberry pi pico could be 1/3 shorter if you just removed all the extra gnd pins.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@deshipu You want those ground pins to avoid signal integrity or EMC surprises.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@deshipu But would you pass an EMC compliance test?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@deshipu Regulators such as the FCC care if you're selling the product.

absolute chaos on a new unmoderated listserv this week as tens of people used the ‘thumbs up’ feature in outlook, which apparently now sends an email, causing an unstoppable torrent

Sick and tired of public schools pushing their trans agenda on our kids. This year alone my children have learned:

-the importance of public TRANSportation
-how TRANSistors work
-the TRANSitive property
-how diseases are TRANSmitted

The brainwashing needs to stop.

I've been on a long journey lately to migrate any and all of useful to me cloud-based services to self-hosted ones...
One of the latest check marks - hundreds of semi-permanently-open browser tabs have finally been moved to a local wallabag instance - https://wallabag.org/
It is a "read-it-later" kind of service to store web pages and such, but local. I'm still testing it with a default SQLite backend, but it can store to MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@denix So kind of like browser bookmarks?

Exploring restic for backing up my workstation (to local external volumes and probably "the cloud" too) at the suggestion of a friend.

Maybe just in time, because...

Now I'm replacing the primary NVMe SSD tomorrow too...

mansr,

@swetland @mikef RAID is not a substitute for backups, but it does save time when you need to replace a drive.

I hate coated non stick pans. Possibly carcinogenic
I have carbon steel pans, lighter than cast iron, and properly seasoned, nothing sticks to them and food cooks perfectly. 100% recyclable and last for years
In fact we have stainless steel and carbon steel pans that are over 12 years old and still perfectly usable.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@wyliecoyoteuk What about ceramic non-stick coatings?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@wyliecoyoteuk Nothing wrong with carbon steel or cast iron, although sometimes a lighter pan is preferable for improved thermal control.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@wyliecoyoteuk The ceramic coatings are much tougher than the horrible teflon ones.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@wyliecoyoteuk I'll try to remember that next time I'm shopping for pans.

Is this different from the regular Loctite, I wonder.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@attilakinali That one seems to be 60% 2-octyl cyanoacrylate and 40% n-butyl cyanoacrylate whereas the Loctite I have on hand is 2-ethyl cyanoacrylate.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@attilakinali That medical one apparently makes a flexible bond. The normal stuff I've used is quite brittle.
