FediPact: Defederating Meta, Together

gentleman, in Why Defederate Meta?

@smallpatatas Having left Facebook because of their intrusive, larcenous and Orwellian surveillance of their users, not to mention their continued support for right wing supporters and Putinista backers, and then Reddit, the last thing we need is to let those Orc fuckers anywhere near the fediverse. I hope that Kbin social defederates from anyplace that smells of Meta - there is no justification whatsoever for allowing them near the fediverse.

Teppic, in Threads Will Break Kbin And Lemmy: interoperability isn't just about the protocol

You seem to assume only Threads can massage it's algorithms. It would be relatively simple to have Kbin / Lemmy apply an instance level multiplier to upvotes, perhaps based (inversely) on how many users that instance has, perhaps based on something else.

An impact would be an instance admin could make individual votes from Threads almost worthless. Sure the algorithm has to be transparent to be palatable here on kbin / Lemmy, but kbin has already changed how reputation worked once, these things could can be changed again if we don't like the impact Threads is having on things here.

This is a good point, and embarassingly, I wasn't aware of the changes to the reputation algo until just now! For me, one of the underlying issues at play here is that someone on a lemmy/kbin instance is seeing information presented in a certain way: pages with ranked posts, with other 'competing' content next to each other. A Threads user (or Mastodon user, for that matter) just sees a post in a feed they scroll through, so their interactions with it don't have the same meaning, in a social sense.

I really think that making a boost or a favourite from a non-kbin/lemmy instance count toward the rankings undermines the social and psychological dynamics of the link-aggregator style of presenting information. Maybe I'm being a little vague here, just trying to find the right words to express the problem. But your solution is along those same lines, so I think we basically agree on the issue even if we're coming at it from slightly different angles :)

thank you for this. I'm new to the fediverse, but I've been interested in learning more about this issue. I'd love to know which way the debate is leaning.
