Anyone have experience adding a dishwasher to a kitchen?

Our house was built in the 50s with a kitchen remodel sometime in the early 2000s. But for some reason a dishwasher was never installed.

We have a 15 amp receptacle for garbage disposal already under the counter, so my biggest concern is doing the carpentry work with the cabinets. There's plenty of room on both sides of the sink, but I've just never done this sort of work before.

Anybody have experience to know what I'm getting myself into? Could it be worth it to just hire a contractor to make the slot and I can hook up the actual dishwasher myself?
