A restaurant in Tokyo had to close temporarily after its owner ranted on social media about a non-Japanese couple who came to the store. Learn why the remarks are so controversial - and how some Japanese restaurants are struggling with the influx of tourists.

@unseenjapan I absolutely see that if you move and live somewhere you should learn the local language. I mean, I did. So I’ve got that going for me.

But the idea that you can’t go anywhere you don’t know the language is just silly.

I do understand that tourist arrive and behave very disruptive. I’m not ok with that. Pretty sure nobody took offense when I visited Tokyo in the late 90s. I was pretty quiet and generally respectful.

But not knowing the language is silly. There’s also far better solutions to this. For instance those apps to find places to eat? Have them list only places that can help people out who speaks other languages.

Also put photos in your menus, or make a simpler menu with photos. I ordered food by pointing several times by myself. Worked wonders:)

My Japanese history is spotty. I only know little bits and pieces. But it feels like there’s a wave of isolation going on again. Which would be a terrible thing in my opinion. Hopefully things turn out differently.

@yon yeah no one’s gonna study the language for every country they want to visit, let’s be reasonable.
