I like anime and manga.

Gunpla is fun!

Computers are fun too, sometimes.

Video games can entertain…

I blog now!

I can code.

This should be updated further at some point really. Or should it?

I did get the Newer Tech G3 card installed, but no video. Looks like I do need to pull the cache card as I'm having the same issue of no video from the AV card.as seen in this video featuring the same G3 accelerator card.

The 8100 is pain in the neck though. Should have probably picked up a 8600 instead, if there was any reasonably priced and good shape. I’ll figure it out on Sunday, and probably get a bottle of plastic cement if I need to glue anything back.

There is an interrupt switch I need to pull out, before I can slide and drop them other board.

@chikorita157 Hey, this does not compute is from around my parts :)

If you are going to a hobby store, you should bring home a nice Gundam too:) :)

yon,

@chikorita157 For what it’s worth, the hobby cement they sell isn’t special, just expensive.

I think someone used acetone as well. To fuse plastic. Same idea, melts together.

Good luck!

PS Gundam.

The question would be, would Steve Jobs release such an commercial?

I have my doubts.

@chikorita157 If you look at the famous 1984 ad, then this is the 180 to that.

Destroy the gray and suppressive in favor of the creative. But now it’s destroy the creative for, what?

Apple used to be the pirates that was all about creativity and learning. That is imho gone.

One never knows in a guessing game. But I would take my chances with Jobs Apple vs what we have today.

The M4 Geekbench 6 scores are out for the new M4, and well benchmarks don't exactly translate to real life performance, it's interesting how much performance increase there is.

Also, the M4 is slightly faster as an M2 Pro. However, I think the GPU scores is a different story since the M4 has fewer GPU cores, although it beats the M1 Pro.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 If I ever get an M4 computer I’m going to compile so hard. Hope the disk is fast too:)

I wonder if the computer M4s going to show up in different configurations. Not sure where Apple is heading here.

Well apart from some vague mumbling about AI. But we don’t know what that means. I mean AI isn’t just about processing power (which the neural engine seems to have) but also storage (size and speed). But we also don’t know what kind of product Apple is talking about. A Siri that isn’t shit would be a good start. A Siri turned chatbot and generator, you can keep that one Apple.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 AI is such a BS term as well. Can mean so much.

There’s a lot of stuff like visual effects, photo manipulation (some better, some worse), processing lidar and such. I’m sure the neural processor (or what they call it) could be quite useful there. I’m hoping the hardware will end up being useful.

But that whole crappy “let’s figure out how to reduce payroll to pool the money for the rich” AI schtick can go hide imho.

(I wonder if it could help with games. That would be neat!)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Same with GPUs. I really would want to see a reduction in energy use.

(A bit because it’s annoying, but also because we could phase out fossil fuels faster if we started to tax excessive energy use etc.)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Feels like they are out of ideas and are just pushing stuff at an unreasonable pace. Doesn’t help that all completion is virtually gone:/

Still curious about those Chinese ones. Could end up being endlessly terribad. Or we get something we’d never expect and a leap. Time will tell.

@Sharkey Quick question. Was playing around with Sharkey and docker compose and ran into some issues (the files seems identical on misskey).

Where would be a decent “forum” to ask questions and such? No promises but it might turn into PRs as well. Would love to get the helm charts up to speed too.

(Realized I have zero open source presence, and could dearly use one. So that’s where this comes from:) Would love to get some PRs in. 25 years in the software game now, so it’s about time.)

@Sharkey I get PTSD from IRC:)

Where would I find the discord? I tried finding it earlier:(

(For the record I’m boring. A.k.a. non-LGBT+ but trying my best to be an ally. Just want to make sure I don’t stomp into some safe space by mistake. Worst thing I’d do is like go more than rust:))

Planning to do the G3 Accelerator and RAM upgrade tomorrow or Sunday on the Power Macintosh 8100. Need to get a bottle of adhesive to repair any “Spindler Plastic" from a hobby store tomorrow

I have ordered a bunch of old Macintosh games in Japanese, including some anime games, which surprisingly had a Windows and a Mac version back then. Yes, there are lots, those that aren't even archived on the Macintosh Garden or Repository. Yes, there were the Pippin games (Apple's and Bandai's failed video game console), most that can run on a Power Macintosh, but a lot of anime related stuff, but only in Japanese only.

I do plan to have these uploaded eventually for preservation, meaning you can run them with Infinite Mac or your own vintage Mac, eventually.

There is something I didn’t realize, the Seiyuu for Yumiko and Chika (or Yasumi and Yuhi), Ito Miku and Toyota Moe are actually part of a Japanese idol unit, Pyxis.

So, they are real life idol seiyuus then. :bunhdthink:

@chikorita157 Things in Japan are crazy connected. Check out the ownership of a lot of stuff for instance.

I don’t think Nintendo will Bamco, nor Bamco be sold to anyone. Felt like Charlie in IASIP when I started to draw the lines:)

Apparently, the Seritek SATA card firmware is flashable on mostly any SATA cards that use the SIL 3112 chip, including that Rabbit Hole Computing SATA card can easily get flashed. While that one cost $90, it comes with a SSD.

https://store.rabbitholecomputing.com/RETRO-SATA-PCI-p/rhc-sata-sii3112-pci-hard-card.htm

I know that there are pre-flashed ones on Ebay, but I tried those and those are flaky.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 I’ve got a SATA card in my MDD though:) Not sure if it’s a “normal” one or one of the flash hacked ones. Been quite a while now.

(Not that would run OS9 on that machine anyways. If I ever get time to tinker with it again I’m putting a BSD on that thing.)

anianimalsmoe, to manga
@anianimalsmoe@sakurajima.moe avatar

Oh, so like shitty AI translated anime on Crunchyroll, but for manga. 19 million dollars series A investment to flood the market with mistranslations?!

They claim that a translator is going to do a double check, but at that speed that they promise, very sus.

This AI boom is getting annoying

https://www.cbr.com/manga-ai-translation-international-release/

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 @anianimalsmoe Swedish and English is quite close and it still won’t work well.

I think because a good translation for fiction needs to be creative, not generative. It can’t draw from a table of potential options as it misses the cultural aspects for instance.

It’s not that a lot of these algorithms are useless, it’s that someone is hellbent on cutting staff.

Wish I knew Japanese. Only language with a lot of entertainment I want direct access to. Honestly can do without the rest. Which is kind of odd.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe @chikorita157 There’s a tipping point where the tools stop helping I think. Like a bell curve.

For instance dictionaries must have helped. Ways to look up cultural aspects as well. Stuff like rhyming dictionaries and thesauruses. Then digital versions instead of paper. Editing on computers instead of however the analog way worked.

But to get a worse translation to fix has got to be more work, if it’s suppose to end up being a good one. Because it’s not grammar/words only, as we know. It’s like translating in jokes basically.

They clearly want to not have staff at all. And I think there’s where the WGA/AGA failed. Because they didn’t want to be copied, when the goal is to remove them all together. U.S. laws won’t matter when it’s all made on some low cost country server park in the end.

While I don’t like bad translations and bad experiences, it’s something I’ve lived with anyways. They always underpaid translators and shitty customer service is pretty much a staple.

What I think is a big proper issue is the further pooling of wealth due to all this. In simplified terms, if we’d taxed AI (and other post scarcity services some made a killing on) and used it for real livable UBI there would be more of a pressure to produce better entertainment (and services and other things).

I mean there’s groups of people who translate manga without getting paid now. If it wasn’t illegal and they didn’t need to live off it I think they would keep doing it. As a hobby.

(Sorry slightly uncoherent. Been some tough months lately:/ Hope the general idea came through.)
