Your last question: It depends on the situation, especially in real life. In social media: I don't feed the troll and block immediately. If someone insists, I have nice meme pics for mansplainers or this: 🖕 (before blocking). In social media you can't debate it.
My worst situation IRL: a big tourist group, elderly people, a problematic couple. They argued, he humiliated his wife in front of everyone. She was completely intimidated, passive, victimised.
