A new law making it illegal to hold or use a cellphone while driving in Michigan officially went into effect this week, and there are a list of reasons drivers can be pulled over, with some exceptions.
Even if a driver is at a complete stop at a red light, it would still be illegal to hold and use a cellphone.
I am pretty good about keeping it in my pocket while driving but this one might get me.
However police are not allowed to search a driver solely because of this violation.
Everyone should be aware of this. I want a reduction in bad driving due to phone usage, but it’s hard not to see the opportunity for law enforcement abuse.
Yeah, I have used the red light to check on my phone before. In some cases, I could have used voice commands/recognition or navigated with the car display controls. In the other cases, I will have to wait or park.
