Aussie Magic Mushroom Map

Been working on a bit of an experiment to see if I can build a foraging map showing optimal areas based on recent weather conditions (in this case min/max temps and rainfall between 4-7 days ago.
The weather condition rules are based on analysis of sightings from iNaturalist.
At the moment it only supports Psilocybe Subaeruginosa covering Australia, but there's definitely room to support more species and regions in the future.

Very cool! I did a similar project (but for Oyster mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest of the US). I really like your use of recent weather data, I just used historic for mine.

Something else I did and I think you might benefit from is adding some blackout layers to your map. Some that I used are impermeable surface maps (roads, parking lots, buildings), private land maps (in the US foraging on someones property is a good way to have a gun pointed at you), and waterway maps.

I was also able to find data on foliage coverage, which I'm not sure if the mushies you're looking for like or avoid tree cover.

Its been several years, but almost all of this info was available as downloadable databases and/or esri online maps from my state government for free.

Super cool project! Its unfortunate I have to read it upside-down though =-p

oask,

Cheers. Great idea with the blackout layers. I’ve found an Australian database with foliage types (e.g. pine forests, eucalyptus forests, etc) which would great to integrate as I know subs love growing around those areas on wood chips and such.

Definitely want to get it working in as many different countries as possible, now that I’ve got the basic platform working. Just need to work out the best way to consolidate the different grid data sources into a consistent format without losing resolution.

gonzo0815,

That's so cool! Will definitely be added if we want to make a linklist at some point.

I'd use a different color scale though. The light blue looks a lot like water, so maybe it could be tough to distinguish them.

Also, I can't see any colored areas on the map itself, is working at all?

oask,

Good point on the colour scale. Will have a play around with some different options, maybe even making it configurable.
It’s working on my end (at least it was at the time of this message) - although it’s still limited to Australia for the time being, so outside of Aus there’s currently no data to show.

gonzo0815,

I'm just seeing an elevation map of Australia atm.
