King of Fighters '99 (aka Evolution) for Dreamcast gets a VGA patch

And the good news keeps on coming for fans of SNK and the Dreamcast! The Dreamcast Junkyard reports that TapamN has brought VGA support to The King of Fighters Evolution, known as King of Fighters '99 on the Neo-Geo and Playstation. This is a big deal, as the game was one of a handful on the Dreamcast that would only work with less advanced composite and S-video A/V cables.

I've tested the patched game on my own Dreamcast with a GDEMU drive and a third party VGA cable, and it looks fantastic in 480p, with vibrant color and crisply rendered polygonal backgrounds. Brilliant stage designs were what gave KOF '99 an edge over its more full-featured successor, KOF 2000, and now you can enjoy them with the added clarity afforded by the VGA format.

It's probably worth mentioning that the previous game in the series, King of Fighters '98, was also made VGA-compatible by TapamN. On the Dreamcast, that game is titled "The King of Fighters Dream Match 1999," despite its 1998 vintage. It's complicated... probably more complicated than it needed to be, really.
