R-Type on Genesis? Without a Power Base converter? And with a butt-kicking soundtrack?!

Oh yes, I'm on that like a Force Unit clinging to an R-9.

Anyway, there's a guy named TheRoboZ who's porting the classic side-scrolling shoot 'em up R-Type to the Sega Genesis (aka Mega Drive). There's still some kinks to smooth out, but he's got most of the first stage finished, including the tail-whipping Doppleganger that stands as one of the game's most memorable moments.

What's neat is that while the game will include the classic R-Type soundtrack, it will also include arranged tracks, including this hard rockin', Bydo-blastin' remix of the first stage theme. (Reminds me a little of Super R-Type, actually.) The tune was written by Cyberdeous, and I for one can't wait to see what else he's got planned for this game.
