Rugrats without regrets: Classic Nicktoon comes to the NES

Hike up those Huggies, babies, because Rugrats is coming to the Nintendo Entertainment System (and a bunch of other game consoles) in Adventures in Gameland. Those other systems will let you switch between 8-bit graphics and a high-definition style that's more faithful to the cartoon, like what Disney and Capcom gave us in DuckTales: Remastered.

Of course, with the NES version, you'll just be stuck with 8-bit graphics, but they're really, really good 8-bit graphics, on par with Super Mario Bros. 2 and the later Mega Man titles. The artists managed to put a lot of personality into these three color sprites. The graphics in Adventures in Gameland are so faithful to the late NES era that you could imagine kids playing this on that other early 1990s Nickelodeon show, Nick Arcade.

It's amazing that Rugrats is coming to an orphaned game system, and it's that much more surprising that we might, for the first time ever, get a Rugrats game that's actually worth playing now that T*HQ no longer holds the license.

(I just hope that at some point in the game, they let you chuck oversized turnips at Angelica. She deserves it.)
