It took ten years of student activism, including the construction of an encampment, for Oberlin to finally agree to divest from institutions and corporations complicit in South African apartheid. Oberlin demonstrated both its willingness to take a moral stand and its ability to screen investments with its divestment from fossil fuels. It has now been 75 years since the Nakba of 1948. The state of Israel has been found to plausibly be committing genocide by the International Criminal Justice Court and has ignored calls from the U.N. Security Council for an immediate ceasefire.
Oberlin's website asserts: "In accordance with Oberlin's history of action in response to 'instances of human suffering, natural calamity, and injustice,' the Board will consider proposals for divestment from entities that contribute to activities that 'shock the conscience.'" The conscience of the Oberlin community is beyond shocked. And that shock compels us to act. We will build community around education, advocacy, and solidarity through robust programming, including: • Vigils • Poetry and Literature Readings • Art Builds • Teach-Ins • And More
Our organizational team is comprised, in part, of Jewish students, who write," Within the promise of "never again" lies our responsibility to use our Jewish voices and bodies to stand up for what we believe is right. "Never again" means never again for all people. It is through this lens of "never again" that we condemn the way our names and our ancestral grief are being weaponized as rhetorical shields for the Israeli occupation of Palestine." Oberlin's Jewish student activists are the grandchildren of survivors of genocide and the descendants of people held at the hands of state-sanctioned anti-Jewish violence. It is precisely because of this history that they stand in solidarity with Palestine. To read more from Oberlin's Jewish students visit the Oberlin Review for an open letter.
