Got this little fellow, an Argon One M.2 the other day, and looking to set up a few services on my Lan. Still waiting for a few things to arrive. Intrigued by but have zero knowledge about . I played around a little on an old 3 over the weekend just to familiarise myself a bit, but after installing a few docker apps the whole thing froze. I've used for years, I'm just a regular user, not a Dev or sysadmin, but projects like this can be fun.

@jarulf This is a really good youtube channel that explains how to install things with CasaOS + Docker in a really easy way, you should take a look if you want to learn

@nyx Looks like he has a ton of useful videos.
Appreciate the tip, thanks.

@jarulf You will enjoy installing Nextcloud + MariaDB video at CasaOS
(in case you want a private cloud)

and the easiest way to make a service public is with cloudflare tunnels (you have a tutorial there too) and will allow you to host your services publicly without open any ports at your router

@nyx I already have my eye on cloudflare tunnel, , , , and a few others. I'll definitely give nextcloud a look, but I'm not sure if it's something I actually need.
This project is more about fun than actual need. My understanding of everything is definitely limited, but I'll hopefully figure things out somewhat.
Maybe some note taking thingy too, I could have used one getting into this little project 😃

First stage of my little home lab project is done.
The final few things I'd bought arrived today, so I assembled the Argon One m.2 and put a 1tb nvme ssd inside. Managed to get raspbian light onto the ssd and boot from it. Installed Casaos and Photoprism. Things seem to work, pics uploaded from my phone with the app appear as do the ones from my desktop computer. Mostly.
It's time for bed now, though. Unfortunately my boss will not believe me if I am suddenly unwell tomorrow.

@jarulf Grats! enjoy it!

@nyx Thanks! 😃
I'm now scratching my little grey cells trying to understand even the basic basics of getting up and running with CasaOs. I do not expect success this century.
Jellyfin is running, but on another pi running doesn't want to cooperate fully. Fortunately the android jellyfin player app on my Chromecast is behaving, but I'd prefer to have a de-Googled set up.
Anyway, I have a long weekend now so time to break everything a few times...

have added to their CasaOS repo. I haven't tried it yet, but this does give me hope

I installed some Jellyfin apps on my OSMC pi, and it can now see my files. Videos run at about a frame every few minutes or so... Maybe that old pi3 just isn't up to the task.
Still using my Chromecast.

Looking for an server, looks like a very likely candidate.

Also got -web running but it's a bit painful to use with an e-ink device.

@jarulf don't go Casaos, these projects usually either try to upsell (like Umbrel), die without notice, or go long without security updates. And migrating away from them can be painful. I'd go with Proxmox instead.

@stooovie I've heard of proxmox, but don't really know what it is. I'll check it out.
If I understand things correctly, Casaos is by the same people behind the , and fully open source, so hopefully the project will be around awhile.
And if it isn't, I can always play around with something else.
Sometimes the tinkering is just as much fun as the finished product, even for someone as generally clueless as me 😃

@jarulf proxmox is a hypervisor, it lets you run full virtual machines (I run Home Assistant as a VM, but you can run Windows, Linux and even MacOS VMs) and docker-like containers. It's based on plain Debian so you can run vanilla Docker on it as well. Problem with custom wrappers like CasaOS is that to be so nice, they run a lot of custom magic glue, which is exactly what makes it difficult to maintain and replace.

I run everything on Proxmox and I'm super happy.

@stooovie that definitely sounds interesting, thanks for the explanation.
