I like voice chat because it allows for you to have more natural conversations with people, and I completely understand people not wanting to give some crucial information to a company like Roblox.

This, on the other hand, is going too far. It gives no real benefit, and I have a feeling they'll switch up their privacy policy later to revert that second statement. Or worse, do it in secret and get into a nasty lawsuit if someone finds out.

Cookies,

@morxemplum i love selling my data to the chinese

I have quite the opposite opinion*. I believe that communities (i.e. game developers) alone should decide the rules.

I strongly take that age alone shouldn't be a reason to deny people rights to use certain facilities of the internet.

Therefore, extorting people into giving up their privacy is wrong to me on multiple levels.

@VisualPlugin

I would agree with your take in regards to the general internet, as I do believe that shitty parenting and lack of accountability respectively has led to baby proofing the internet and making it a worse place.

With a platform like Roblox that primarily has a userbase of children, this platform should take measures to ensure safety among children. One thing children like doing is lying their age. I would know, because I've done it many times.

I'm thinking this through. I think we have to find a different solution that keeps children out of danger whilst getting rid of the discrepency between how we 'baby-proof' the general internet and how we treat Rōblox.

I believe that education is the best solution to having out young people keep themselves safe.

@VisualPlugin Roblox is seen as a "kids platform", despite Roblox wanting people to see it as a platform for all ages. It makes sense that child safety is a high priority on Roblox.

Meanwhile, social media is meant to be for teenagers and older people. Roblox has certain precautions put in place to at the very least prevent/mitigate users from going off platform.

As for your education approach, it is great on paper. Considering how terrible American education is, your mileage may vary.

VisualPlugin,

@morxemplum

Makes sense. The problem with external sites is that they don't observe the same safety standards that Rōblox does.

Taking from my experience, your demographics will vary by which games you play. Adopt Me attracts younger players and Phantom Forces attracts adolescents. No ID req'd.

The education system in the US has structural problems. Who's to say parents aren't responsible for raising their children and instilling into them an understanding of the world outside of home?

anaminus,

@morxemplum Odd take. Raw video doesn't even leave your device. Meanwhile, voice data is sent to the cloud and run through AI/otherwise moderated to detect bad stuff.

@anaminus I see where you are coming from.

Unfortunately, for a platform like Roblox, moderation is something that is essential for a platform for all ages (and even then, Roblox does a terrible job at it).

And this is a take I've had for months, they should've kept voice chat a 18+ feature and not lowered the age barrier. Lowering it to 13+ was a big mistake.
