The Unofficial Signal Messenger Community

ptsdstillinmymind, in Signal Review 2023: Secure Messenger (Pros and Cons)

Signal lost me when they took away SMS and added crap like stories. The new CEO is trying to make a social media app. When people really liked Signal for what it was.

Although I never used sms via Signal I agree on both points. The Stories venture was such a flop.

Izzgo,

Signal lost me when they took away SMS

I'm still using it because my son insists, and I do like the security. But even before they officially dropped SMS there were quite a few of my friends who could not receive my texts unless they joined Signal. So I learned to keep 2 messaging apps on my phone desktop, which I find frustrating. Now of course I can only use Signal with other Signal users. I have quit recommending Signal to others.

RvTV95XBeo,

Totally agreed on the stories bit, but I disagree on the SMS - it’s an unnecessarily complicated additional “feature” to maintain that in no way serves Signal’s purpose (secure, encrypted messaging). It’s antithetical to their mission and not their responsibility to prop up an archaic standard, even if it may cost them users.

Yep! And it is working pretty well for me! Here is the official announcement they have pushed out in-app.

Id at least agree that government officials shouldn’t be using unofficial channels where messages aren’t stored for potential audits.

IE Boris Johnson using whatsapp and deleting messages

They could do that same with Olvid as well, the app that French government recommended its officials.

I think it’s better for someone to have both installed rather than just whatsapp.

So go for it!

I had the same thoughts. I have a view that I try not to use billionaire owned systems as I just don’t like or trust them. My family largely moved its chats to Signal but continue to use WhatsApp and Messenger for others. Take what you can.

Do both.

Convert the people you can, accept those you cannot.

They will use both, but it helps build critical mass for more people to continue to switch over.

Then when they’re talking to some of their friends they can choose signal if other people happen to try aswell

It worth the effort, let them discover Signal as an alternative to Whatsapp, they can still use Whatsapp if they want, I don’t see a probelm with that, but let then know you will only use Signal from now-on for personal reasons. My familly migrated in 2021 and most of my friends are also reachable on Signal now. I think many can enjoy the simple and straightforward design of Signal.

It’s always worth it to try to convince people to stop using meta products.

Other than reminders to enter your pin, I have not seen any use for them. Anyone know?

SenXEk, in Signal is finally getting a major feature Telegram launched four years ago

It’s not the exact same feature as Telegram because Signal’s scheduled message does not sync across all devices.

What? When I read this title, I expected usernames or something nice. But no. scheduled messages… This has been a feature since weeks already. How is this new. Idk when exactly but I got that update probably a month or little longer ago. How is this worth a headline NOW? xD

It seems that they only had it running for a limited user base, they are rolling it out to everyone now.

I feel like I have this feature since forever (at least for several months now). On Android.

Yes I’ve had this for several months already
