quite a shame, but now theres a handful of new sh games coming out! ascension suuuuucked but i'm remaining hopeful about the rest, maybe hesitant about the SH2 remake
I feel like many people are on the fence about this one. You either like it or don't. I personally didn't like it, and my opinion may be unpopular.
I didn't like Walter as a character, I thought the whole "he believed the room was his mom :0000" plot was dumb and shallow. I also thought the game didn't at all feel like a Silent Hill game, while the first 3 had that distinct feeling despite their differences to one another. It felt like a lower budget completely different (and sadly, uninteresting) horror game from a completely different title, and the name SH was slapped on. I know they were trying to be different and take the series in a bit of a different direction rather than derive from the first 3 too much, but imo, it didn't work. It was long and boring is really all I have to say about it. I'd have preferred something like the first 3 over that if that's what's considered "going a different direction". None of the monster designs except the twin victim stood out to me, they were bland, like someone introduced to the series yesterday tried to make a SH monster but it was just a generic mess that was more paranormal activity than SH, though for monster designs SH3 was similarly lacking sometimes but not near as bad (insane cancer, numb body (literal velociraptor lol), pendulum). All in all, not a fan, and wouldn't play it again.
It’s my absolute favorite game of the main series, by a mile.
I think it’s the most relatable, mature, unfiltered, scariest and downright cruel SH game, with the least Japanese campiness that the others tend to fall to at some point or another.
After recently replaying 1, and 2, I gave 4 another try with the GOG release and I stand by my opinion. It’s a shame the Team Silent were originally rushed to release it, and I hope the SH2 remake does well financially so they end up remaking 1 and 3 and then 4, with the most experience and resources because damn… it deserves it.
I think it’s the best video game movie adaptation I’ve ever seen but that’s not saying a lot.
I like it tho. The first half is great IMO, and it is what makes me play it every now and then. I agree that the music and atmosphere were captured really well.
Of course! The thing I love the most about the games, without a doubt, are all the Portishead-inspired and ethereal ambient music tracks that Yamaoka crafted... Alone In The Town, Heaven's Night, The Day of Night, The Wait (Café Theme), A Stray Child, etc.
I don't usually like the YT compilations because either they start great and 10 minutes in they hit you with all the hard rock songs, or they add the Japanese soap opera piano tracks that I don't enjoy.
definitely try it! the link i added is the one i tend to go for, it's just to beautiful and calming, it's like it adds the SH atmosphere to your bedroom/office/wherever you go!
Watching Silent Hill 1 (and 2) gameplay is something I love doing when I need to relax or even when I'm feeling sad. There's something comforting about how the game looks and sounds.
its just so good! something about it is beautiful and terrifying at the same time, works great for horror. i guess that, and its relatively easy to learn to do and small file sizes, are why it became overused in the indie horror genre. even i tried to make an ps1 horror game for fun (didnt get far lol) and i make ps1 style characters/monsters all the time. ive done many inspired by SH. maybe ill post them sometime
I think it has a lot of potential to reignite passion for the series, as well as bring new fans in. I just wonder if the HD nature of it will end up subtracting from the game’s innate eeriness - the sort of vague and undefined shapes of faraway things are an important element of the game imo
agreed about the vagueness being creepy. i made a post about the ps1 graphics of SH1 and why theyre so damn scary, it's because our brain fills in the gaps of those low res lumps and shapes. we wont really have that anymore, but maybe they will use the fog and darkness to their advantage to maintain some of that? we will have to see
