@ami_angelwings I mostly post about hockey, as I'm a hockey writer (NHL and PWHL, mostly, but sometimes about other leagues as well). But, I do post a decent amount about college football and the NFL during their seasons. A little lacrosse and tennis as well. A lot about NASCAR and the NWSL during the summer, and some MLS.
The #NFL is the busiest hashtag on the whole of Mastodon on matchdays.
Most of the #NHL folks also use #HNOM. I know the soccer folks also use #MastodonFC.
My browser (using Advanced View) is sorted into columns by hashtag for each sport so I can get a real time feed on what's happening (a section of my screen is shown below).
#Tennis was ticking over nicely for the Coco Gauff Quarter Final that just finished.
There are also groups for most sports e.g. @nfl, @cfb
There's a vibrant #COYS / @spurs contingent here too.
Not enough people use groups. Very handy feature. They federate better than hashtags and can be added to lists, which means you can get those messages out of your main timeline and into a topic-specific list. Tags tend to get lost off replies, too, whereas groups tend to get included in replies.
I dunno. I’m not a college ball fan (yet). But without an algorithm to share your stuff automatically, we need to use tags and groups for engagement. (Is there a group for college football, like @nfl )?
@dashrb@nfl@emarktaylor@ami_angelwings@cfb As a Texas Longhorn alumnus, absolutely. You will not find a Texas Longhorn fan who takes kindly to sign stealing, because OU and Barry Switzer did exactly that to us and it's quite literally one of the sorest spots in UT history. Harbaugh should never coach in college again.
@GabeMoralesVR@ami_angelwings@emarktaylor@cfb@nfl I’m not sure about your instance but I feel like mastodon instances only pull in posts that its users subscribe to. I don’t know if that’s accurate. But I would ask you, are you “following” the cfb group account? I think this behaves differently than following the cfb hashtag
The filter on my Football column is below - and I post every day about Football.
In the Summer we had a guy who said he couldn't see any Baseball posts and, after one of the techies had a bit of a dig, it was because he was on a one person Instance and his Instance wasn't Federating very widely (or at least with the instances of the people who were posting about #Baseball).
@emarktaylor@ami_angelwings@nfl@cfb I've just been throwing CFB toots into the wild looking for others to chime in but never see any chatter. I just attribute it to my instance. Quite literally the only replies I've ever gotten to my CFB toots, was one guy asking why I was wasting my time since he also saw no other CFB toots.
I run a single user instance with a few relays though and I regularly see posts from the CFB hashtag. But I would bet a significant chunk of them come from following @emarktaylor with all of his boosts
@tom@emarktaylor@ami_angelwings@nfl@cfb It could very well be a federated issue, gamedev.place tries to keep riff raff out and stay on topic to gamedev itself. 99.9% of the posts I see from this federation are strictly on topic.
@GabeMoralesVR@emarktaylor@ami_angelwings@nfl@cfb one other thing you might want to check, in your mastodon settings you might consider deselecting English from filter languages, some servers don't auto-select a posting language so they'd be filtered out of your timeline if they haven't selected one
@emarktaylor@tom@ami_angelwings@nfl@cfb I'm following everyone who replies! This is great, it's been such a wasteland on my feed for the last couple of years. I really missed CFB twitter.
Not sure what your desktop looks like but I have columns for Lists (including the group accounts) and ones for hashtags for each of the sports I like ...
