Wrote 6 books about testing PHP code. Staff Software Engineer @ Ziff Davis Shopping. Conference speaker, organizer, and first WurstCon sponsor. Baseball fan, Magic the Gathering commander player, board game enthusiast, plus all sorts of other assorted nonsense. Probably started working with PHP before you were born. This series of posts from BlueSky form Spike Trotman (a great cartoonist) are just awesome:

"lol getting a lot of good blocks out of the Drake/Kendrick skeets.

How Dare You Care About That, I Didn't Give You Permission skeets are the Fast Pass to the shadow realm, so by all means, line up, you joyless fucks”

“Don't you know there's a BAD THING going on?! I obviously do, condescending weirdo. And there literally always has been.

If your requirement for enjoying frivolous, fun things is Nothing Has To be Going Wrong Anywhere Else Ever, you're in for a sad-bastard life.

But we both know it's not, so."

Great read on how regressives stoke campus protests as a tactic to amplify their own policies and fuel rage against "liberalism" amongst their base, and how academic leadership falls for it again and again.

@mwop Most US universities are hedge funds that offer classes now. Leadership is doing exactly what is expected of them.

Can we please stop being “Ruby developers” or “JavaScript developers” and start being “people who solve problems with code”?

Languages and frameworks are tools.

Never once have I met a “hammer carpenter.”

“If you use a screwdriver you’re doing it wrong. “

Let’s grow up.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@bphogan “I am a developer who solves problems with Ruby” is the same as “I am a Ruby developer”. If you need crown moulding done, are you going to hire someoene who says “I do crown mouldings” or someone who says “I solve problems involving wood with carpentry tools.”

I do not understand your stance here.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@bphogan People have been making tools their identity in all sorts of industries since forever. 🤷‍♂️

Greedy management is the reason we can't have nice things.

I have my issues with Micro$oft. It didn't get better today...

Outlook is an abomination. They decided to implement RFC 5546. But actually they didn't.

They only implemented a tiny part of it. And of course there's no documentation, support doesn't know anything and the only way to confirm assumptions is "The Community" of unpaid people that know as much as myself.

And we trust them with our code? Really?

</rant>

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas Not that I am a defender of Microsoft but the people who make decisions about Outlook are not the ones who make decisions about GitHub or VS Code. Ranting feels good but pick the actual target

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas We all have our own tolerances for bullshit. Seems like you reached yours with Microsoft

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas I think the biggest issue is the ecosystem of support for tools like that

I am looking at the Hyundai Ioniq5 but have concerns about charging on the road in Canada. Tesla is so convenient 🤷‍♂️

@jrconlin @dandb I have been doing a little bit of research and Hyundai’s own in-car nav does do “route to chargers” for you so it will probably be okay in the short and medium term

The only career decision I wonder about was 18 months before I started working I had a chance to start working with Ruby and Rails and turned it down because even though it came with lots of vacation time and benefits I had to pay for the benefit premium and most of the vacation time was limited to fixed dates.

I am pretty much a NO RAGRETS person when it comes to job choices.

I need to remember that Mastodon exists! I’m currently writing a bunch of content to do with PHP and this would be the perfect place to talk about that.

I’m currently trying to decide whether is an interesting enough topic that people may like an in-depth course/series on it. It seems to be something a lot of people are vaguely aware of, but don’t really know the details.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@ollieread My default answer to questions about this sort of thing is “absolutely you should write about this.” I asked this question back in 2008 about testing code and the answer was “get to it” and it built my entire career.
