Pepper,

Probably 3, I feel like I have the most content and customization in it. I love the ability to freely travel in the neighborhood and even make them from scratch. But all the bugs and performance issues (like memory limitations that can't be overcome with better hardware) are the reason I ultimately stop playing it each time.

1 is of course nostalgic and has that silliness to it that I feel is fading away in the newer Sims games. There were so many amazing ideas in it that I'd love to see again. But obviously playing it at this point is a bit unappealing since I've already experienced better gameplay, UI, etc of the newer games.

2 is a good middle ground between the performance and silliness factor, but the build mode is quite limited, which is why I'd say 3 is better. But 2 tends to run well, though there are some occasional issues and having to configure all the settings files to make it playable is annoying.

4 is obviously better in performance than 3, but it feels way too much like a downgrade from 3 for me to really like it. Build mode has some improvements which I enjoy, but the gameplay gets me bored quite quickly compared to the other Sims games.

MsBluu,

It would be 3 for me. I feel like I was much more engaged and ended up playing households for much longer than any of the other games.

4 is great for building though. Now I tend to spend most of my Simming time making families and building them houses, which never actually get played.

loreasaurus,

4 is actually my favourite! It has some definite problems, and the monetization scheme of it sucks. But I enjoy the QoL changes they’ve made over the years, and it’s by far the best for building and Sun creation.

AGuyAcrossTheInternet,

Personally, I'm undecided. In terms of humour, Sims 1 is a clear winner to me. As for gameplay, I really dig 2 and 3. 3's open world and travelling aspects were super lovely, but 2's out-of-the-box experience is better.

For building only, I could even settle on 4, but the DLC spam that's even putting Sims 3 with its store to shame sours that.

ImASquirrelYipee,

To be honest, I just can't get over the negatives of 1. Of course, it was the first and of course it didn't have aging or anything, but I just can't deal with the fact my sims aren't 'going anywhere'. There's no advancement, and I find that quite boring. I think 2 is amazing and all but 3 just adds a little cherry to it's own giant pit of icecream that Sims 2 has as well.

I don't think the Sims 3 Store was that bad. Don't get me wrong, it's annoying and extremely clunky for something the costs so much, but I don't think the idea was misplaced because it allowed their team to build smaller ideas into larger things. Now, for the Sims 4 Kits, that doesn't work because they aren't building on the ideas. The Sims 3 Store clearly had individual ideas that were separate and expressed well, whereas the Sims 4's Kits are kind of murky.

I could never personally get over the puddingfaces of 3. Just put me off too much.

I think I have too much nostalgia for 2, but it's such a good game! It feels like they accounted for just about everything, even in the little animations that everything has.

ImASquirrelYipee,

To be fair, my 3 game is heavily modded. That's partially why. I think I'd like 2 more if I weren't on mac.

That's very fair! I mod the hell out of all my games too, and TS2's mod community back in the game was HUGE. 4 is so strange compared - there's a lot of pretty outfits, but not so many functional ones.

AGuyAcrossTheInternet,

@ImASquirrelYipee

If your gripe with 2 on Mac is that they're not selling all packs, don't worry too much. Get Wine and install the Windows version. That way, you get all packs and it runs damn great on Wine – at least as per my experience on Linux. But I'm sure Macs won't have bigger issues either, even the ARM-based ones.

3 modded is both a blessing and a curse. Because I'm addicted to CC, I saw Error 19 way too often, hah! Had to chop most CC off and that hurt!
