RFE/RL: Ukrainian truckers stuck in blockade at Polish border planning hunger strike

Ukrainian trucker Roman Vlasiuk said that seven trucks per hour should be allowed to cross, which then should increase to 14. If these demands are not met, the group of around 200 truckers will "officially declare a hunger strike" and "switch to only water and tea."

Ashyr,

Polish drivers are blockading the Ukrainians because they “claim that the lack of entry permits for Ukrainian trucks is hurting business for Polish drivers”.

Two Ukrainian truckers have died of natural causes waiting in the blockade.

Not sure what’s up with Poland turning into a frenemy these last few months, but this is pretty disgusting.

It’s not the government driving it, but truckers who don’t want competition from Ukrainian truckers.

You had similar upset about truckers from eastern parts of the EU. I remember some long-running drama when French truckers took issue with Hungarian trucking companies that didn’t conform to French minimum wage law.

This is not to excuse it – in the US, if you start blocking off public highways, I’d expect the cops to be arresting you before long – but a number of countries in Europe definitely do have some level of letting people get away with stuff like that. I remember a while back when French winemakers were stopping Spanish wine trucks – Spain had been outcompeting France in wine, moving in on their turf – and dumping wine onto the road while the French police just watched.

Burn_The_Right,

The article does not explain what the motivations are for the blockade, who is responsible or why a hunger strike would be egfective against someone who hates Ukranians enough to trap them in a foreign country. I would think the goal in trapping them is to starve them to death. A hunger strike would be counter-productive if so. Also, Slovakia is somehow involved, but their relevance is also not explained.

This article presumes the reader is already completely familiar with the story including the nuances at play. Reading this article only makes the entire scenario even more confusing. I want to care, but there is simply not enough information presented to form an opinion on any of it.

totallynotaspy,

Some more context from Reuters(https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/slovak-truckers-start-ukraine-border-crossing-blockade-joining-polish-protests-2023-12-01/):

Polish drivers have been blocking several crossings to Ukraine since Nov. 6. That blockade has redirected some traffic through Slovakia, causing hundreds of trucks to pile up for kilometres on the approach to the border.

Truckers from Poland and Slovakia both complain that their Ukrainian peers offer cheaper prices for their services and also transport goods within the EU, rather than just between the bloc and Ukraine.

Basically man babies getting offended about supporting Ukraine.

APassenger,

I’ve found I can tolerate sacrifice better than I can tolerate making loved ones sacrifice. It hits different.

Candelestine,

Damn… Going downright Mahatma Gandhi on them. Desperate times call for desperate measures I suppose, and this is one way to pull some attention back from the Middle East.

Props to the truckers.
