An explanation for your friends and loved ones of why people can't find things and what they can do to help us:

I'm confused - I also don't register what's in front of me, but thought that meant I was hypo rather than hyper visual. But maybe the hypo visual presentation is a defence to limit overload.

They say: when they see a cluttered desk they don't see the individual items but The Amorphous Blob of One Thing. Can someone confirm that some humans DO see multiple items simultaneously? Seems unlikely - isn't focussed vision like a narrow torch beam sequentially switching locus?

I've just discussed your question briefly with Helen, who's allistic. She didn't give me a direct answer, but we did arrive at this conclusion: when I'm searching for something, I have a picture in my mind. If the object doesn't match the picture -- if it's a different colour or in a different orientation, or if it's partly hidden -- then I often don't see it.

She, in contrast, claims to search at a more abstract level. So, if she's scanning the desk for a pen, any pen will do: she'll find it, no matter which way round it is (left-to-right, front-to-back, or standing upright in a mug) or which colour it is.

@FrightenedRat @nddev @actuallyautistic I am aphantasic, so can't hold a picture of something in my mind when I'm looking for it. I relate to the Amorphous Blob! Everything's undifferentiated until I start looking for a specific thing. I have to look for it by feeling/remembering the last time I used it or put it down. Most of the time I can't find it if it is not in its generally-assigned blob-area, because I put it someplace really weird when I was distracted.

Me; asks 12 times a day if anyone can see my tea cup when I'm practically looking at it.

Also me: always first to find the best rocks and shells at the beach.

This isn't The same thing by a long shot but it's similar

In my sixth grade class we all took a portion of the number 6 as a puzzle piece ~ Yes, ironic ~ and then put it all together on our door.

When they got to my number - was 20- I was in another world for a long time

They kept on asking who 20 was and I kept on thinking who is 20? Would they please answer why don't we get this going?

Then I realized I was 20

"You're number 20. Got that?”
Yep. I'm 20. Got it. Putting that in my brain. Number 20!
...
Huh, that patch on the wall looks like a penguin. I wonder how that same sex penguin pair are doing? What zoo was that again? Bondi vet sometimes goes to zoos. I like the Australia Reptile Park episodes. Maybe I should adopt a pet lizard again.
...
Wait, what number was I? I'm sure I'll remember when it comes up.

Whoever is number 20 is an absolute loser why won't they give Mrs Mac their piece!?

Someone like that, I tell you.

@VoxofGod @nddev @actuallyautistic ouch. Glad it helped you realise you need to be kind to yourself though.

The going blank, are you aware of it, like you're just buffering? Or is it more like you've just been switched off for a few seconds and you were totally unaware anything happened?

@Aerliss @nddev @actuallyautistic

I know that I tune out and I'm aware of everything around me but I'm very disassociated quite often it's having been born in a family with an image to maintain with early onset diverticulosis making me learn all of the facets on a memorable show, Just sadly the ones that are remembered because you're the butt of the joke

I flip that around these days

But two roommates have said that I check out and then come back and don't remember

Blank could be seizures. You might want to look into that.

@nddev @actuallyautistic thank you for this. Passing it along and hopefully alleviate the trauma for the next generation.
