I absolutely feel the same way. I’m so pissed off at Google for this.
They’ve ruined my YouTube liked videos playlist because they stuck all my liked songs in there.
They keep pushing videos on me in YT Music.
They’re pushing TikTokification bullcrap instead of better radio algorithms.
And the recent player redesign with YouTube comments and the sliding options is just awful.
What ever happened to having one app that does one thing really well? Why do we have to have two apps that do everything? YT Music and YT do basically the same thing, but it just makes the YT Music experience worse.
So the only thing I care about Google Podcasts was that it played podcasts on my Nest Minis without tying up our Spotify, so kiddo #1 could have a dance party in one room while kiddo #2 listened to Wow in the World in another room.
No word on how this will work for Google Home devices in this link. I hope it keeps working!
(My wife and I have both used Podcast Addict on our phones since as long as I can remember.)
This is literally the first time I’ve even heard of Google Podcasts, if they’re shutting things down because people don’t use them enough then maybe they should do even just the barest minimum of advertising
It was not great when I tried it a few years ago. It seemed very low-effort, basically a glorified web app shortcut. The only feature I liked over my go-to podcast app (PocketCasts) was that it worked much better with the Google home speakers. Then I heard YouTube music was rolling out podcasts and I knew it was only a matter of time until they killed it.
I didn’t think so at all. The interface was simpler than any other app I’ve used. You just select a podcast and play it and it would go through the podcast episodes the correct way (oldest to newest).
I loved it’s simplicity and I’m so mad at Google for killing it.
I liked just because it basically was a web app. Choose podcasts on my laptop, then find them in the car when driving, no app required. Now I need to install an alternative app (which won’t be yt music)
That’s genuinely a good use case for shorts tbh. Considering just how everyone and their dog have a podcast show now, an easier way to consume these would be really ideal
Hahahaha I got a pixel7a TODAY and when i was setting it up it tried to install Google Podcasts, but I noped out for Antennapod. I did momentarily wonder if I should give GP a go since I’ve only just this week started using antennapod.
It’s a good replacement tbh. Pocketcasts kept crashing on me so I uninstalled it in a rage. The only thing that’s annoying me about Antennapod is that I only want one episode of the BBC news podcast but when I open it up there’s 3 there waiting for me, not a massive issue and I’m sure there’s a way around it somewhere in the settings, way better than a crashed app.
It’s very good. I wish there was a way to sync podcasts without hosting a gpodder server. There is supposed ot be a free site, but it doesn’t seem to work anymore.
Still not worth paying the insanely expensive subscription to sync on pocket casts though. I might try to selfhost gpodder soon, I just need to fix my internet so I can port forward.
Yup that’s my one issue, otherwise I’d swap in a heartbeat. You can do it through nextcloud servers but not any free one so far as I can see. Wouldn’t know where to start with a paid alternative.
Edit: Podverse, also FOSS, has a sync feature as part of their subscription. It’s $18/year. Haven’t used it to know how well it works, but much cheaper than Pocket Casts anyway (and a 3 month free trial it seems). It’s on F-Droid.
Man. YT Music’s podcast support is sorely lacking. I’ve been using Google podcasts for a couple years and now I’ve gotta go find a new client that syncs play across multiple devices.
YT Music everything is sorely lacking. Back when Google Play Music existed and a 3rd party desktop app made it a great alternator Spotify. Then they killed it all just so they could pad their song numbers by including YT videos
I gotta say, i find the youtube videos in youtube music a feature not a bug. Not so much for the videos themselves, but i listen to a lot of obscure music, some of which is not licensed to be on traditional streaming, yet often has videos available on youtube. My playlists can be a combination of properly licensed music, and jank uploads
GPM used to allow you to add YT videos into playlists just like a song; the only thing YTM brought was that song searches were now mixed with those YT videos.
I don’t have it yet in my region. Does YouTube Music support faster playback and the ability to skip silences? Those are the most important features to me.
I pay for pocket casts and enjoy it. I’m sad they switched to a subscription model awhile back but being able to switch from phone to desktop is really nice.
I stopped using pocket casts after they switched to a subscription model. That really pissed me off. I’ve tried antennapod but the syncing isn’t the best.
