If they did believe, they wouldn’t expect the teachings of the religion to cater to their preexisting beliefs.
You are talking about people who believe in an all powerful being of perfect goodness (who also likes to give kids cancer), because an authority figure told them to do so. I don’t think many of those people ever even think it’s strange that “God” just so happens to hold true everything that they already believed.
