I wonder if they have even enough self-awareness to be cognizant of that fact as they set out to assemble new doctrine and new deities that conform to their belief system.

Religion is often a smokescreen to dehumanize others and not have to feel bad about it. Because if you’re religious then you’re good, and a good person can’t be guilty of bad things if they are done in service to their religion.
