REALLY proud of this one. I dry-brushed on Spaceship Exterior for Army Painter over a black primer, then highlighted the windows and lasers in a way that I feel really makes it pop. New personal best.
Joining in, I was introduced to BattleTech through the original MechWarrior games that were lighting up the gaming scene in the 90s. One of my friends got into the card game, and from then on I broke into the fiction and began reading it as much as I could. Though I took a hiatus through college, Harebrained Scheme's game soaked up hundreds of hours from me when I found it a few years ago. It dawned on me I #1) Loved the setting still and #2) This was a recreation of the tabletop game. So I bought a copy of the beginner's box, then A Game of Armored Combat... and onward. I spent the next year playing against myself, until I finally met some people in the local FLGS and we started playing together last winter. Since then I've taken up mini-painting, I read the fiction, I have lead MechWarrior: Destiny missions, and I own enough of the manuals I can write the sticky. I'm thrilled to help build our community here.
I was first introduced to BattleTech back around 1990 or 1991, when the group I was playing D&D took a break from dungeon running to smash big mechs around. I recall taking the Warhammer, because you know, it had decent stats and had one of the cooler mech designs from Macross. Loved it when the PPC scored a hit.
One of my most memorable moments was when the GM of the group introduced the clan mechs to us blind. I remember the standee (we were too broke to get standalone minis) looked unfamiliar, and she narrated a bit of the situation when the mech (a Timberwolf) appeared. The damn thing just plain murdered us all with us in L1 3025 tech. Imagine a 75 ton heavy mech with max armour, moving like a medium mech of its time (5/8), and with lasers that did as much damage as a PPC with like 50% more range. When you're used to tactics and expectations with 3025 mechs, it was truly a paradigm shift. We thought she was cheating all something until the end of the game when she showed us the new source material.
I haven't played BT for some 20 years now, but it's part of my gaming background, and I'll always cherish the times piloting my big metal mounts.
OK, got some weird reactions out of kbin on this one. It uploaded a picture of my cat instead of these minis.
SO, anyway, to celebrate my joining the mod team, I wanted to share some potato-quality images of the first and latest battlemechs I've painting since starting painting over two months ago.
As an introduction, I'm a life-long Battletech fan who spent a great number of his teenage years reading the fiction and enjoying the video games. After a stint with the HBS Battletech game a few years ago where I basically played it as much as possible, I realized the tabletop game might be of great interest to me and began picking up merchandise.
As of last winter, I started playing locally with a friend and am starting to join some groups here in Florida to play as often as I can.
I look forward to working with everyone and building a greater place for all of us!
HBS's BattleTech is actually quite a faithful translation, if you convert some of the numbers to match the tabletop figures. They added a very important mechanic to speed things up though: Evasion dropping everytime you get shot at. It's one of the factors that make the tabletop game so draggy, with everyone maxing their evasion bonus to at least +3 whenever possible, making for some ridiculous to-hit figures when playing at default pilot stats.
Thank you! Yeah I was just figuring out primers, and it uses Speedpaints. My goal with later mechs, like the Mad Cat, was to make the colors as smooth as possible. But I'm still really new. I have another Atlas I'm going to play with in a few months to see if I can do any better.
I've been playing MW5 with some mates and were playing as a fictional mercenary group we called Ironclad Company. I decided to follow in that vein and try and think of a scheme that could suit them.
I found Duncan Rhodes draconian combine tutorial super helpful and substituted my own colours in. Games workshop's website has a great recommendation system where you can pick a single colour and it will automatically recommend others that go well with it.
Why not both!? You could always have a mix of both to play against! 😁 I know my plan is eventually to have an IS company and clan Trinary to pit against each other
I've not really had any exposure to the TT game short of BattleTech on PC but I was a huge MechWarrior 2 fan back when I was a kid which has persisted ever since.
Definitely enjoyed the couple of small TT games I've tried though!
I was massively impressed! I got mostly IS boxes as I've only the starter set and I've yet to dip into the clan stuff.
I've played a couple small games with my partner(1-2 Mechs each) but we're a little space limited to have a full sized play area. I'd say I'm more into the hobby aspect but definitely not limiting myself to just that. :) What about yourself?
I deffo enjoy the hobby aspect of it for sure, but for me Alpha Strike is where it's at! My kiddo (9) and I play a fair bit of hex-based Alpha Strike. Other than that, not a whole lot. I do miss long games with a star or fewer mechs, but there's something to be said for seeing a good 8v8 or bigger match taking place.
MegaMek is great! It's also a great resource for running games on virtual tabletop, because all the mechs and stuff are png format and can be used as tokens.
We've finally gotten an in-person crowd at the moment, so taking a break from MegaMek for the most delightful of reasons. But it is an amazing program.
