niph,

I keep being told “if Biden wins then next time the Dems can choose someone younger or lefter but if trump wins there will be no democracy in four years” and my mind boggles at how delusional this is. As if the DNC are suddenly going to pander to the youth and realise it’s time for AOC (and I know she’s awful but that’s what the libs think of as a radical candidate lmao) after spending decades ensuring only the most hawkish imperialist fucks get the nomination

TheFinn,

Roe was in trouble when McConnell blocked Obama’s supreme court nominee. It was lost when Trump packed it with cronies.

Or do you just like pretending you don’t know how government works?

My screen says that I’m at Hexbear. But you’re saying I’m at Reddit or perhaps Bluesky. I wonder where I am really.

NewLeaf,
@NewLeaf@hexbear.net avatar

Soooo like, why should anyone support democrats if they won’t do anything about anything? Please explain to me how the government works cause I’m just a big poo poo head Russian bot

BynarsAreOk,

The point is not that these events happened, but rather that the Dems refused to do anything to counter them. Apparently and rather conveniently only Republicans have the power to interfere and get what they want huh.

You’re right its interesting and perhaps Dems should definitely learn more about how it works lol.

Wakmrow,

Why didn’t the Dems block Trump’s nominees

ElChapoDeChapo,
@ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net avatar

Eat shit and die you disgusting little monster, we understand how this shit works better than you ever could

Sodium_nitride,

The Democrats had many legal mechanisms to take care of this issue. They could have codified it. They could have threatened the court. They could have even distributed abortion drugs by mail (which the states aren’t allowed to check iirc)for free, which would have significantly weakened any bans.

Alaskaball,
@Alaskaball@hexbear.net avatar

When the institutionally reactionary supreme court blocked any attempt of FDR’s resuscitation of the American economy, FDR unilaterally threatened to destroy their chokehold on “legality” by proposing to reorganize the federal judiciary by adding a new justice each time a justice reached age 70 and failed to retire.

You know what happened? The supreme court immediately capitulated to FDR, and he went on to beat everyone who went against the interests of the American working class over the head until they fell into line.

Biden could right now threaten expand the seats of the justices by two seats, soon three in two months when Sotomayor turns 70, to ensure Roe, or literally anything the mealy-mouth not-remotely democratic party pantomime its support for becomes the law of the land

But they won’t because they serve the same fucking interests of the capitalist class and are equal enemies to the American working class, alongside the workers and oppressed people of the world, as the goddamn republicans

HakFoo,

There’s no circle to square.

American liberals are incapable of going for the jugular. Biden can’t do squat, and is surrounded with a party that doesn’t know how to do squat. Trump and the GOP has an easier time because outside of maybe a wall, they don’t have any deliverables to build; he goes in knowing his mission is to bust the place up.

Now, I can see why they’ve learned helplessness: there’s very little on a lot of real economic or envitonmental issues they can touch that won’t get capital riled against them.

But they seem to have gone the same way on the low-risk social issues too. They had 40 years to say “Roe is a compromise we’ve all agreed to shirk behind, maybe we should codify it to take it out of the discussion.” Ditto trans rights, gay marraige, etc. These could have been safely vaulted 10 years ago, before they became the bugabears they are now.

I think they revel in the “more-civil-than-thou” righteousness of inaction. Thry didn’t have to go too aggressive to protect that stuff because it would cause needless conflict. Actually closing the door to the henhouse isn’t respectful to the fox.

The thing that gets me worked up most about this shit is not how confidently incorrect all of these assholes are but how smug and insufferable they are about it. They have all have the knowledge of literal high schoolers about pretty much everything and think that they have the basis to tell anyone “these people have never heard of political literacy.”

Good luck, I guess.

InevitableSwing,
@InevitableSwing@hexbear.net avatar

I like parts of Bluesky. But I’ve been wondering how many liberals view voting for Biden as some kind of litmus test. And they actually unironically believe in horseshoe theory even if they are 100% unaware of the term.

how smug and insufferable they are about it.

I’m going to have to avoid a lot of political threads because there’s no point in talking to them because far more often than I expected - that’s their exact attitude. They are having a lovely brunch at a lovely eatery as they talk about how vital it is to vote for Biden to save democracy. This is the most important election of our lifetime and - oh my goodness - who is this?

Hey, everybody! I’m a dirty dirtbag leftist who posts comments that prove I don’t understand how politics works! Trump would be worse? But how about right now? You can’t really expect me to be pro-genocide. Can you? Can you really??? Hey! Where’s everybody going?

DengistDonnieDarko,
@DengistDonnieDarko@hexbear.net avatar

trump wouldve killed roe twice! is that what you want, you little putler bot??

InevitableSwing,
@InevitableSwing@hexbear.net avatar

trump wouldve killed roe twice!

But that would make Roe a vampire and Trump the hero vampire killer. Wouldn’t it?

Frank,
@Frank@hexbear.net avatar

I agree, it is a dumbfuck argument. If you told someone that they democrats just let Roe die without opposition they’d say you’re a nut, that’s ridiculous, that would never happen, the democrats would fight tooth and nail, pull out every stop, take to the streets, riot, revolt, to protect Roe! “You lost Roe under Biden” is a dumbfuck argument. It’s the most dumbfuck thing imaginable, and the fact that it literally happened should have been a wakeup for the democrat base.

InevitableSwing,
@InevitableSwing@hexbear.net avatar

I thought about going into the thread and pointing out that Biden didn’t even have Trump’s guy at the USPS, Louis DeJoy, shitcanned. What’s the point of giving Biden/dem political power if they won’t even make a minimal effort to use it? But the Bluesky libs usually won’t engage in any meaningful way. It can be a liberal HOA over there.

It can be worse than r/politics. There’s no downvote button to make them feel smug and superior as they downvote or comment-lecture. They usually ignore me or are a bit obnoxious. Others block or mute me. I’ve only been at Bluesky a bit more than a month and already 100+ people are blocking me and plus an unknown number are probably muting me.

axont,

More than just the postal service. Biden kept Trump’s FBI director too.

queermunist,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Ironically, what this does is make people crave fascism, because all the liberals keep telling us that fascists can get things done while liberals are constantly stopped from accomplishing anything they promise by every procedural trick in the book - and even ones that aren’t in the book, but we’ve been doing them a really long time and it would be so uncivil to break with tradition! They’re doing his campaign for him.

InevitableSwing,
@InevitableSwing@hexbear.net avatar

fascists can get things done while liberals are constantly stopped from accomplishing anything

You must vote for the dems! How could you not? They have better ideas and they are better people!

It’s a West Wingian view of reality.

I usually can’t even hate watch MSNBC anymore. The network usually fails to me laugh and it only makes me angry. Libs on the net have Trump derangement syndrome. But tv and pundit libs 24/7 have it dialed up to 11. And there’s no mention at all ever about what the democrats will do to combat fascism. Voting is the be-all and end-all.
