They're not entirely dead mall but The Proper People have some quality content.

Here's a playlist of just their dead mall videos: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLc9pB32V1QgLxqmVTmpSm-zsMILxdehj

I love being here for the birth of a new community (magazine? wtf it is lol)

I recommend Abandoned Dallas. I’ve only watched one video of his, Exploring The Abandoned Valley View Mall, but it was excellent. He found some crazy stuff and ran into some sketchy characters also exploring the place.

CheeseAndCrepes, in North Dekalb Mall, Atlanta, GA

This place isn’t officially dead yet. Went and saw a movie there not that long ago. I do think it’s slated for demo quite soon though.

davysnavy,

Yeah the theater’s still popular but when I was there the mall itself was quite dead

Why still pay the electric bill for these places?

If there is a chance of selling the building it is necessary to keep it in working order.

rammjet,

Who fills the Coke machine?

The vending company that owns it

CascadianBeam,

The guy from Capitol Hill needed something to do when his coke machine broke.

I’m really glad to see Dan Bell back and making videos again. I love his stuff

davysnavy,

Same. He’s really in a league of his own when it comes to this kind of content

starship_lizard,

Fingers crossed we’ll see a return of ADR as well. I love that series.

I think he has made it clear that series is over for good. Despite the drama with Rick, Dan said he didn't like doing it anymore.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s the kind of niche new-to-me stuff I love to stumble upon.

davysnavy,

Of course! Glad you found it interesting :)

probably one of the big inspirations for a lot of people interested in malls was Michael Galinsky’s Kickstarter book https://time.com/3805133/flashback-to-the-timeless-malls-of-the-1980s/ (2013) which collected his 1989 photos

davysnavy,

That book looks awesome thanks for sharing!

Ooh, that’s some memories. My grandparents lived in this area and even when I was a kid in the 90s this mall was in rough shape. Being from somewhere with no mall, I thought it was awesome anyway.

subway,

Some of the larger connected stores are still open

davysnavy,

Yeah there’s a Megamart and a Burlington Coat Factory I believe. The Megamart has some amazing Korean food.

There is so much good Korean food in that whole area too.

I worked as a maintenance guy around 1986 or '87. Back then you could smoke in the mall and they had ashtrays inset in every trashcan lid. We used to go around with our bare hands and remove the cigarette butts. By today's standards the thought seems insane.

I remember someone shot a bunch of soap into the fountain and it made bubbles ten feet high before someone turned off the pumps.

It's eerie to see it like this and in Stranger Things.

How are the plants getting water?

cassetti,

Very humid subtropical climate

I hate when escalators are blocked off for no reason… I was at a mall where they were all blocked off so you had to go to the entire other end of the mall to use the one elevator for the entire mall!

Unless they’re actively getting worked on, just leave them as stationary stairs if they’re not working! Just makes the entire place more unfriendly to people visiting…

damnYouSun,

There must have been stairs somewhere. Otherwise that’s a fire risk.

SatyrSack,

just leave them as stationary stairs if they’re not working!

I don’t really know anything about escalators, but my guess is that is a safety issue.

DpwnShift,

I’m certainly not an expert either, but logically an immobile escalator disconnected from power is (to borrow the Mitch Hedberg bit) simply stairs! They don’t block off stairways in buildings and force everyone to use the elevator…
