Mastodon and Threads both completely missing trending story of the #earthquake in Taiwan. Twitter (RIP) has Tsunami as top trending right now so it is still close. Bsky actually sort of does the worst in that there is no trending section and the best in the sense that at least there is a public bot that shows trending topics and has the earthquake, not just tsunami, as the hot topics https://bsky.app/profile/nowbreezing.ntw.app

@kjhealy most of the time I think those "virality baffles" are a good thing, but I really wish we could solve for trending/breaking news so we could finally put Twitter out of its misery.
@cpep it does for me as well, but only if I know that there was an earthquake. I'm looking at the trending topics in the UI (that screenshot) that would ideally be showing this significant event in close to real time.
@Tim_Eagon me too CNBC already has a full story up, so it's on mainstream outlets as well. The trending system on mastodon is just not able to surface these things quickly. Threads could do it easily but they are weirdly allergic to actual news.
