Trying to find and understand the best microblogging platforms for my needs

These days I searched and try to understand more about Mastodon alternatives, and see Pleroma and Misskey (and his forks) are more lightweight than Mastodon, and saw some people says Mastodon has some security vulnerabilities.

However, I have encountered some difficulties in understanding some things. Some instances block other instances. Some says you can only speak in English. Others seem private and I don’t understand if I can see content from other platforms. Etc, etc…I know are differents instances rules and fully respect that, but on other point of view, dont understand very well which I can choose to see all content from all platforms.

Now, I would like to use one of these platforms to watch content and be able to speak in English, as well as speaking in my mother tongue. But I have always backed away because it has been difficult to understand some things.

Basically, I would like to know which is the best platform to interact with, one that has the minimum privacy and security rules, where I can see other instances of other platforms (be it Mastodon, Pleroma, etc., etc.), and where I can speak in my mother tongue. At this point, I’m little confused, to be honest.

My favorite content is sport, music and technology, but I’m also afraid of entering an instance that isn’t suited to this.

If you can help me, I would appreciate it.

Add nostr to your list of platforms to try. It’s basically mastodon except:

  • Your identity is not tied to your instance. So if your instance closes, you don’t lose your followers, DMs, etc
  • Your instance can’t block you from following anybody else, same in the other direction
  • DMs are encrypted, your instance admin can’t read them

Nostr is its own protocol, it doesn’t talk natively with mastodon/lemmy/kbin/etc. But it is a federated protocol, so in addition to a twitter clone it has a YouTube clone and other kinds of platforms on it, and they can all talk to each other.

I use nostr and mastodon. IMO Nostr is going to win. It does everything mastodon does but without tying identity to an instance, I think that is really important.

I put Nostr aside because , with some opinions I got here ( lemmy.ml/post/10243294) , Nostr is very centralized on Bitcoins matters and his environment. I like a lot the idea behind Nostr, but I guess it that will not suits me

I have also been searching for a microblogging instance that doesn’t have so many random blocks. It seems most instances block more liberally than even the more closed off Lemmy instances. Due to the sheer size of mastodon and number of other services, it kind of makes sense. I’m definitely getting paralysis-by-analysis trying to choose, though. It might help to consider newer forks like iceshrimp and sharkey, too, even just for their functionality. Or maybe that will make choosing harder? Lol *you already mentioned forks, my mistake!

But still, like I said, I haven’t landed on anything in particular. It just seems more segmented, whereas with Lemmy, the biggest instances have pretty much identical front pages. I fear missing out on something too much…

Sorry if I’m kind of rambling and not really any help. Your post just reflected my experience of trying to find something. Hopefully we’ll get there!

We are on the same boat. We need to find the right platform and the right instance, and as a newbie on the fediverse planet as Im, I will need more deep searches. This is a punch on the head, but I guess this is a process to choose wisely and understand full completely the microblogging ecosystem.

You dont need to apologizie. No problem mate.

will need more deep searches.

To be fair, it doesn’t take that much to create an account on one instance and then see if it works for you. I must have more than ten alts on several platforms

I would suggest to find an instance in your mother language, it’s the easiest way to find content in that language. When I want to see Spanish content, I go to masto.es. Some other languages use other platforms (usually Misskey forks)

You are spanish? If yes, I can call you mi hermano.

Thank you for your advice. Didnt know Mastodon has an instance from my native language from my country tbh. And I really doubts if Pleroma or Misskey has instances where I can see posts from my language, but as I said, dont know if speak my language is valid or not there…

honestly, i would give them all [platforms] a spin. you are going to find some very different experiences across all of them. when you find a platform you like, then find an instance that you prefer of that platform.

i am running an mbin instance with zero defederation (no blocks) if you want to see what this platform is like https://moist.catsweat.com . i know the devs are actively working on multilingual support also.

e. also, the fediverse is very 'subscription based'. you will need to go and subscribe to the content you want. be it microblogs or groups, and then it just happens. its very nice.

mbin is not reddit look-a-like, like lemmy? Really humble and stupid question ik.

Im pretty happy with lemmy, so I don’t think signing up for mbin would bring me anything new. I guess ^^‘’

And ty for you reply.

Mbin has both Reddit and Twitter aspects bundled in.

mbin has both the microblog (twitter/mastadon) and the groups (reddit/lemmy) in one. so you can have a single account and communicate with anyone on lemmy, but also mastadon/universodon
