I keep them away with clothing. Mostly I wear regular clothes that cover me fully and add a netted face covering that goes over a baseball cap to keep it out of my face. If it’s very buggy I have a bug shirt (that is also netted and where not netting it’s thick) and pants designed to resist insect bites.

chickenofthewoods,

So are you essentially walking around in netting? I think I can get behind that. I might have some hanging around the house. Thanks so much, have a great day!

Yes, I have one of these: canadiantire.ca/…/adult-bug-resistant-mesh-head-a… that I wear under my top layer of clothes. It’s very easy to see out of. It’s important to wear a hat under to keep it off your skin otherwise they can just bit through.

My actual bug shirt has less fine mesh and I use it less often: canadiantire.ca/…/bushline-adult-bug-resitant-pul… I will probably wear it backcountry hiking this year.

Wearing a thin cloth mask will keep them out of your mouth and nose, at least.

Generally a thin but tough layer will be too much for them to get through, something like a heat-wicking shirt if it’s warm.

chickenofthewoods,

I never thought about breathing in bugs until right now. 🙃 I guess the newest task is finding something that’s comfortable to hike with in this heat 🥵 thanks so much! Hope you have a good day!!

ccunning,

Picaridin or deet based products are the only ones that work reliably for me. You need to be careful with deet, especially in products that use it in high concentrations, as it can act as a solvent for some things (sun glass lenses, watch crystals, and nylon items like some tents, and I forget what all else).

Permethrin can also be used to pre-treat clothes, including shoes, but I’m never organized to have pretreated anything before the hike and never think about it until it’s time to pack/go. Permethrin should never be applied directly to your skin and is also toxic for cats.

chickenofthewoods,

Thank you so much! I’ve never thought about pre-treating my clothes before! I’m very appreciative of the warnings as well. My sunglasses are essential for hiking 😎 hope you have a good day!!

ccunning,

Glad to help. I learned the hard way so hopefully others don’t have to.

Bakachu,

Picaridin was a game changer for me. It worked so much better than DEET. For some reason it’s not as popular as DEET products in the stores so I just restock from online stores when I run low.

ccunning,

I kinda despise deet but when I learned about picaridin I bought a lotion which I also hate. I need to get it in a spray but I’m trying to use up the lotion first.

Sometimes I just deal with deet because I already have it in the more convenient spray…

I know this is the worst excuse…

I will try to do better…

😅o

Bakachu,

Gotta think of your mosquito customers and go with what they hate more.

When I was out visiting FL I saw a ton lined up on the outside door screen. I sprayed deet on them through the screen and I swear they just shook it off like water spray on a wet dog.
