The sign just means “animal crossing”. Despite depicting a deer, it’s not trying to define a species.
The one below however does (Wildschwein = wild boar). That’s all.

Flabbelgnarpf, This is a great Weg to verhohnepipel two Languages auf einmal. It’s propably the most German thing to kritisier the misunderstanding of Straßenschilder.
