MikeT,

Don’t know how to feel about this one.

I would prefer Remedy expand their own IP and encourage people into thinking about Alex Casey instead.

They don’t own Max Payne, Rockstar does. They should buy it back instead of reworking this.

Hopefully a lot of the bad ass mods that really made the first couple of games even cooler get ported for the remakes. And not just the tons of Matrix mods because the game came out around the same time the movie was new and extremely popular.

May Payne was a really fun game but I don’t have high hopes for it today. It’s too much politically correct bullshit everywhere that kills the fun. That being said, Baldurs Gate 3 showed the way to fun again.

dingleberry,

I loved Max’s look on 1 and 2. They made him a “generic game protagonist” in 3. Half of the fun was watching him grimace the whole game.

ours,

Blame Rockstar for 3.

Loved playing Max Payne so much.

I wonder if they'll bring James McCaffrey back since he and Remedy have been working together for almost every game Remedy's made (the only one I can think of that he wasn't in is Quantum Break). McCaffrey's voice is so iconic as Max imo, it's hard for me to imagine anyone else doing it.

0000000nowhere,

No way they’d ever replace him, especially after the way the way the community reacted when Rockstar tried doing it

Pratai,

It’d be really cool if developers would stop remaking old shit and instead, start creating new shit. But I get it- remaking old stuff is cheap and people eat it up. I mean, look at Hollywood. Same thing. And gaming is all about cash cows now.

dinckelman,

Once you turn what you love doing into a business, there’s no going back. There are still people deeply passionate about making games, but that’s just not the reality of these massive studios. They’re in for the money, and the leadership aren’t even… gamers themselves, somehow

Yokozuna,

Start playing more indie games with passion behind them and less AAA money grabbing half polished turds they keep pumping out. It’s the only way out of this mess.

dinckelman,

That’s basically all I do at this point, and it’s been really nice. A lot of genuinely fantastic experiences. Always labor of love, a game they’d love to play themselves

nobody said you have to buy it.

remedy’s last three games were all brand new IP

Pratai,

Nobody said I can’t have an opinion on it without buying it either.

you’re complaining about Remedy remaking one of their older and most famous games when their last three releases have all been new IP, so i feel your criticism is misplaced. this isn’t coming at the expense of anything “new”.

Pratai,

I’m also not complaining. I’m just using this one article to point out how the INDUSTRY as a whole has become very remake-happy.

Do you really think this bothers me?

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

you literally asked for them not to do this

Pratai,

You can ask for something without complaining. You should probably try and learn that these aren’t the same thing.

Like, requesting that a restaurant doesn’t over-salt my steak isn’t complaining that their steaks are too salty. It’s just suggesting something.

Phegan,

I feel like there is no shortage of new things, especially from indie developers

echo64,

They literally have a brand new game coming out in a few weeks. You can do both.

GoodEye8,

I personally don’t mind remakes as long as they’re well done. The thing is one the greater horror films of all time, it also happens to be a remake. The Departed is a great cops and robbers movie, it’s also a remake. Oceans eleven, Casino Royale, magnificent seven are all remakes. But people don’t remember the good example of remakes, only the bad ones.

And also in gaming. System Shock remake is great. Residential evil remake, great. Demons souls, great. There’s nothing wrong with getting good remakes, there are plenty of games that absolutely could have a remake. Like I would 100% want a New Vegas remake, one that does Vegas (freeside and strip) and Legion justice. After all the remake doesn’t need to be 1 to 1 with the original

When it comes to Max Payne I’m not sure how they could make it better than the original, but I’m not going to instantly write it off.

Yaaay! Max Payne! Hopefully they remaster all the janky community made Matrix mods too! 🤪

lustyargonian,

It’ll be interesting to see how a linear shooter from back then would translate to today’s time. Would it be more like Last of Us where each encounter is thrilling and tense, or would it be like Max Payne 3/Uncharted 4 where you move from one level to another with a moving plot line?

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever,

DOOM and DOOM Eternal both did pretty well. And, truth be told, the pacing is not too dissimilar from a Call of Duty where it is a constant intensity with a few spikes for set pieces. Max Payne has a few “walk and talks” but mostly it is just about clearing rooms.

lustyargonian,

Yeah you’re right. Doom Eternal is great. I’m playing Metro series and even that’s pretty good in terms of balancing story and gameplay.

It’s just that coming from Remedy, Max Payne’s basic formula of corridor shooter probably doesn’t match their other games anymore, so I’m curious to see how they’re going to remake it.

Supa,

It’s hard to imagine “tense” action with how goofy the enemies act, so I guess the second option sounds better? I’ve never played Max Payne 3 or Uncharted 4, so I don’t really know exactly what you mean.

lustyargonian, (edited )

Me too. Max Payne 3 is like the previous entries, just a bit more focus on close range corridor shooting with cover mechanics. Similar to previous entries but with a very stylized story telling.

orbitz,

I am curious how they’d translate it myself, I recall the first game vividly as new and thinking it was awesome. Though I assume the next game wouldn’t be marketed for me either. An updated drug scene would be interesting, haven’t had a good one since one of the Batman games. I probably missed some drug sequences but Max Payne’s was pretty effed up at the time.
