Is this a fine place to talk about table top RPGs?

Hello! I hope I am not off topic, this is literally my first day here (ok, maybe I should wait and know the community a bit better but I 'll try to be slightly bolder...if it's not ok just let me know). I understand that by choice there are no super focused communities to avoid an excessive fragmentation. So I wonder: is this the good place to discuss about tabletop RPGs? Coop/solo modes, too.

I am thinking about Call of Cthulhu, Savage Worlds, Gurps, Fate, ... And not only the usual super famous one!

I am a long time GM and sometimes player, both IRL and online, and currently I am playing a lot in solo mode (with the help of the mythic GM emulator).

bionicjoey,

There's "rpg" on both lemmy.ml and lemmy.ca.

_ed,

Check the sidebar - it’s a generalist gaming community so share away. As a note there is also a dedicated ttrp community at !ttrpgs which can be joined from beehaw.

Also pathfinder.social has a few different community for pathfinder and starfinder

Kinda new to all this, I'm on lemmy.world and can't login to blahaj zone, how do I subscribe?

Figured it out! You need to search that community on your own instance and subscribe from there the links don't just work

The way it was explained to me is that the very first time a user searches from their own instance for a community on another instance and clicks it, it federates one server to the other, enabling all of the commenting, subscribing, etc. You were probably the first one from your instance to search for that, and now the link is created and everyone can.

gromnar,

Thanks, I still have to get the hang of this "federation" of servers-thing. I found this beehaw community and the philosophy seemed welcoming and inclusive and so I went for this! I will check out the one that you linked above. Thanks!

Beehaw is lovely and a solid choice. But remember it's just your home instance where your account and some local communities live. You can still join and interact in communities from the other instances such as the one you've just been linked :)

_ed,

No worries and yeah Beehaw’s great that’s the great thing about this platform, you can have a home base and still hang out elsewhere.

ThreeHalflings,

Also !rpg

Tabletop is and has been discussed here so you're good :)

goat,

Yeah of course.

though i dunno a thing about tabletops except the DnD movie

gromnar,

The movie was quite fun! And it gave a good idea of a fun rpg session, but I prefer other game systems rather than DnD to have that kind of feeling!

Have you ever thought about trying ttrpgs?

goat,

Yeah but I wouldn't know what the fuck to do, and I'd feel a bit cringy with what kind of roleplaying I need to do.

bezoar,

Start with what you're comfortable with. 3rd person narration makes everything seem a lot less cringy and lots of people stick with that. (Speaking in your character's voice seems kind of rare, tbh) I would also recommend using a more tactical combat focused game to start so you've got something kind of gamey to cling to. D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2e, Lancer/ICON, Mythras... There are a lot of games out there to try.

On the flipside of this, and totally anecdotal, but I found that something like D&D5e ends up getting too 'bogged down in combat / rules', and makes new players think it's all about planning for and executing in, fights. Of course, it's very DM dependant, but something not too gamey like Cypher could also be a good jumping point; There's enough dice rolling to still have that gamey feeling, but it doesn't steal a lot of new players focus from the roleplaying itself.

tissek,

DnD also tends to end up in combat because there is where the system gives mechanical support. Other parts of the play not that much.

My recommendation for starting system would be Ironsworn. Not only is it free but everything is in one book. GM stuff and hiw to run the game. It is in there. Since it belongs to the PbtA family ot is also very open with what the GM can and should do, it removes part of the veil between players and GM. It becomes more transparent. In my opinion that is a good thing.

Also it supports GM-less and solo play.

Why I mentioned Cypher and not Ironsworn, I don't know; My little group are pretty much running that system as is right now, with a couple of minor homebrew changes to link back to our OG campaign. We're still early days (relatively speaking, 6 2-ish hour sessions in), but it runs great so far.
Cypher probably feels more memorable because that's what our DM ran our first campaign in, and that's what really got me into TTRPGing properly.

Honorable mentions to Monster of the Week also, quick to learn and very, very fun. The episodic nature of campaigns means if you want to try 1st person roleplaying, if you really want to mix things up with a new character, it can feel more natural for a character to leave because they died or otherwise.

tissek,

the fuck to do

In the simplest way what you do is reacting to the obstacles the game master puts in the way of your character in a way fitting to your character. Say there is a baddie attempting to violently rob your character. Would your character face the challenge head on? Describe how they do it. Are they direct and powerful? Deceptive? Or perhaps they would try and escape from it.

cringy with what kind of roleplaying I need to do

What I find comfortable doing and default to is 3rd person, and many I've played with are similar. I describe my character 's posture, mannerisms etc to quickly give their expression. As for talkning I often just summarise their main points, what they want out of the conversation. And how they say it.

If you have seen actual plays you could get the impression that always first person acting with accents and all that jazz is common. Honestly it is not. Also many of those in the (bigger) acctual plays are actors by trade. Hopefully that takes some pressure of you
