bionicjoey,

It’s nothing really. Heathcliff is a trash comic. The “jokes” are barely jokes. Maybe 1 in 20 get so much as an exhale out of me, let alone actual laughter.

bionicjoey,

The correct way of saying it out loud is “pop exclamation point underscore O S”

bionicjoey,

OP used confusing wording. They go over

bionicjoey,

Is “cocaine and caviar” a thing apart from this? Because I saw that exact text on someone’s shirt yesterday, but didn’t notice if the bottom of it was exactly this shirt

bionicjoey,

At its core its as bad as china’s grasp on a lot of markets.

The government should be allowed to regulate markets as much as necessary to protect citizens from the dangers of capitalism. Laissez-Faire doesn’t work.

bionicjoey,

I agree, but part of the issue is also that this app is operating in bad faith with local laws, so trying to regulate their behaviour is an uphill battle. They just ignore fines or find ways of hiding their bad behaviour better. Obviously they aren’t the only ones that do so, but I’m not going to complain about one shitty company getting what’s coming to them.

bionicjoey,

I’d love to see it, but as I said, I don’t like letting perfect be the enemy of good. Banning Tiktok is a good thing IMO. I’m not going to complain that it shouldn’t be done just because there is more work to do.

bionicjoey,

I’ve seen lots of attempts to market on Lemmy. Most get called out as spam and shut down quickly, but there’s also exhalting of YouTubers and other influencers who in turn shill stuff like crazy.

Also the gaming subs are really bad for this because posting trailers and announcements about games seems to be viewed by some as a way of “padding” Lemmy with content, so as to make it not feel so empty here. If you ask me, we should welcome the emptiness, only posting about things we actually want to talk about. People who post dozens of game trailers, announcements, and patch notes are just flooding the feeds with things that may matter to nobody.

English and French fluently. English is my mother tongue. French I learned in an immersion program in primary school. I didn’t study french at all in highschool or postsecondary, and always hated it during primary because my parents put me in immersion to “challenge” me. I started working for the Canadian federal government after uni, and they have pretty robust training programs for getting to full french fluency from any starting skill level. Plus, there’s a bit of a glass ceiling for monolingual public servants in the federal government.

Recently started dating a Chinese girl and so I’m trying to teach myself a bit of Chinese. It’s not as hard as I expected it to be, but it is very hard. In many ways it’s the opposite experience of learning French relative to English. Learning French, the vocabulary is pretty easy and the grammar is very hard. Learning Chinese, the grammar is dead easy but the vocabulary is really hard.

bionicjoey,

Work in IT for the government. Pays well, is unionized, good benefits. Work is sometimes frustrating but that’s true in any job

bionicjoey,

For whatever reason, people love headcanons that rely on the main protagonist hallucinating and us the audience being dragged down into insanity with them. There is a fan theory out there that Cameron in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a figment of Ferris’ imagination. It’s really bonkers stuff but people love this style of fan theory for some reason.

bionicjoey,

Make them in the image of their ancestors

How do people actually dumpster dive to get free food? Are there any other cheap/free ways like this to get food?

My local food bank can only provide 8 packages with referrals every time before you run out, and I have, but my situation hasn’t improved financially due to various set backs and I’m struggling to feed myself. I’ve heard that supermarkets throw out massive amounts, but have never been in a position where dumpster diving...

bionicjoey,

I’ve heard food banks and some eastern religion temples like Buddhist and Sikh temples will serve free food for the needy.

bionicjoey,

IME that’s only really a thing among non-English speakers

bionicjoey,

On top of all of these reasons, telephones are pretty painful sensorially for me. The distortion caused by telephony companies performing lossy compression on the audio leads to some truly painful sounds coming out of it and it’s very difficult to even process what someone is saying. We live in 2024 but phone call audio quality sounds like we’re back in the 1800s

Arm the homeless with crypto and dodecahedrons

bionicjoey,

Nope. Only the one that makes big money for Hasbro is good for mental health.

Love, strange love a star woman teaches

I’ve known for years that Gene Roddenberry wrote lyrics for Theme from Star Trek so that he could receive 50% of the royalties, but it never occurred to me that I should try and find out what those lyrics were. However, the lyrics did come up recently in a nerdy trivia show I watch, “Uhm, Actually”, and now that I know...

bionicjoey,

That’s the secret: in India, there’s no such thing as being underpaid

bionicjoey,

I can’t say I buy that this is an autism thing. I think it’s just something streaming services have done. I got into vinyl collection a few years ago and it really drove me to uncover the great albums, often by just buying ones where I knew they had one song I liked and listening to the rest.
