Anticorp,

You stop it through legislation and enforcement. Anything less is just lip-service.

davepleasebehave,

Stop eating fish. no demand no overfishing. you can survive without fish. we can’t survive in a barren desert

core,

Stop eating fish

did you try that?

davepleasebehave,

what do you mean?

core,

I mean did you try not eating fish to stop the fishing.

davepleasebehave,

I stopped eating fish to reduce the over all consumption of fish. yes.

core,

… did fishing decrease?

davepleasebehave,

I don’t really understand your point.

If I am not buying fish then even by a miniscule amount the demand has decreased.

scale it up and you have your answer.

Anticorp,

The point is that there are 8 billion people on the planet, and no amount of personal responsibility will resolve the problem. Legislation and enforcement are the only way to resolve this issue.

davepleasebehave,

Why not both? But in the meantime, I’m going to deny my money to the industry.

Anticorp,

That’s great! Keep up the good fight. But unfortunately we need a more robust solution to actually solve the problem.

davepleasebehave,

Until you come up with a more robust solution I would recommend removing your capital from the system that is destroying the world.

Cheers!

core,

if the global fishing hasn’t decreased due to your tactic, then another tactic might be necessary

davepleasebehave,

what would you suggest?

core,

stopping people from fishing. you could take their nets or boats or sabotage them somehow. protest on the dock so they can’t go fishing. I’m sure you can come up with something that’s effective.

davepleasebehave,

you are welcome to do that. some of it is illegal.

I’m happy to remove my capital and boycot the system.

Boycotts have traditionally been both ridiculed and effective.

core,

good luck

davepleasebehave,

thanks.

Starglasses,

A simple idea, but sheds a sense that the producers are the problems.

People need food and fish is a food provided. Scolding consumers as the problem doesn’t address that producers are making up the things we are being blamed for buying?

davepleasebehave,

Do you know the idea of supply and demand?

Starglasses,

The name already spells it out. Overfishing. Fishing over ok amounts.

mayoi,

Overfishing harms quite literally noone but humans.

Seasoned_Greetings,

I don’t understand how the environment works

loki,

i’m pretty certain it harms the fish being fished.

Anticorp,

And the fish that eat those fish, and the sharks that eat those bigger fish, and the algae and plankton bloom that are kept in check by those fish, and the coral that are dependent upon a balanced eco-system, and the land animals that depend on the oxygen and precipitation produced by a healthy ocean… It just keeps on going.

Duke_Nukem_1990,

No overfishing in a vegan world btw.

aodhsishaj,

Do you also use arch linux?

Duke_Nukem_1990,

Why, do you need help with the setup?

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

It a joke. “How do you know if someone is vegan (or uses arch Linux)?” “They’ll tell you”

Duke_Nukem_1990,

Pretty bad joke if it needs to be explained I guess. Also “No overfishing in a vegan world” is true weather or not I am vegan lol
