When I was a kid, my grandparents used to go to Singapore once a year (my grandfather had some business stuff there) and they bought me a Sega Game Gear. It wasn't available in my country at the time, so I couldn't buy games myself. I had to wait for them to go over and bring me back new games. So I'd have new games to play for a month or two every year. I loved that Game Gear.

Badabinski,

A childhood friend had a Game Gear and I was always so jealous. It seemed like a crazy machine from the future.

At the moment? The PSP. Not only does it have a fantastic library of games, including some sharp classic game collections, but it's an emulation monster, handling a wide variety of game systems up to the original Playstation. Plus that memory card slot pretty much future-proofed the system, letting you put dozens upon dozens of official games and homebrew titles on the machine without ever having to put in a UMD disc. It's reached the point where people have removed the UMD drive entirely and replaced it with a high capacity battery, because the extra play time was more important to them than a slow and antiquated media format.

Badabinski,

I'm going to put myself as a weirdo, and also bend your question quite a bit. I'll first provide two answers for my favorite handheld systems from my childhood.

I think my favorite mobile system was my Palm Pilot. I had several (starting from a Palm Pilot III in elementary school), but my Tungsten T5 and subsequent Palm TX were absolutely sick. There were so many good turn based and realtime strategy games released for Palm OS over the years, and the platform was very hackable. My Palm Pilots were also my mp3 players and PMPs for a while, although I eventually migrated to an Archos 604.

After that, I'd say that my favorite handheld was my DS lite. I have such fond memories of playing Mario Kart during my lunch breaks at school over the summer, when I worked as a sweeper (i.e. middle school kids working as assistants to the janitors). Being able to wirelessly play with a bunch of other kids was so cool.

Nowadays? My Steam Deck, nothing else compares for me. I love that thing.

Fellow PALM enjoyer??!! I also loved my Palm!! I even had two Palm phones, Palm Centro and Palm Pre!!! I adored that environment so much. I would take my old Palm pilot to School and write fanfictions with a foldable keyboard!

Badabinski,

Helllll yeah. Did you have a Palm Pilot buddy? Me and this one dude would try to beam stuff to each other from across the classroom.
