why the choice to call the groups magazines?

@g8phcon2 Hi there! :) I chose this name a long time ago. It's a play on words. In Polish, the word "magazyn" can have several meanings depending on the context. Here's an explanation of its various meanings:

  • Magazine: It refers to a periodical publication containing articles, stories, or images on various topics, such as fashion, news, or entertainment. Magazines are usually published regularly, like monthly or weekly publications
  • Warehouse: It represents a large storage space where goods or products are stored before they are distributed or sold. Warehouses are used by businesses to store inventory or raw materials
  • Depot: This meaning refers to a facility or building where resources, supplies, or equipment are stored or kept. Depots are often used in the context of transportation, logistics operations

We are considering a change to something more neutral. Although I personally like this name, I would like to further investigate if the name is uncomfortable for others.

First of all, I deeply appreciate the work you've put into developing kbin. Thank you very much for making this happen.

As a new user, I was completely confused and overwhelmed by kbin's numerous terms. To be honest with you, I hate the term "magazine" in this context. Magazine are static one-sided publishing while readers consume without any contribution or interaction. "Communities" make much more sense. Please please please please consider changing this name.

Now back to the numerous terms: magazines, threads, microblogs, articles, posts... I don't know why it is necessary to be so complicated. I am never interested in microblogs, but when I tried to write a new post I got automatically redirected to microblog. Then I realised I needed to write an "article". But no, I am not a publisher, and I and not a researcher. I don't want to write an article. Please let a post be a post.

@ernest For what it's worth, when doing the Japanese translation, I decided to lean into the "Magazine" name and used words that would be used when talking about a real-world magazine for things like subscription, article, and others. Either style works for me, but I just wanted to share.

@ernest well now if you were to change it, you'd need to come up with something else that starts with m or links get confusing. I see no problem with it at all, I was just interested in the reasoning. I think it's fun, and we need more of that on the internet, and particularly the 'verse, these days. Eugune changing TOOTS to POSTS to sound more professional was a sad sad change. I was glad to learn some folks like @valere chose to exercise their rights under the AGPL and continue to call it TOOTS on their instance.

@ernest I thought "KBIN" is short for "Karabin" = rifle, so "Magazyn" = magazine made sense. I would actually love to keep that wordplay going and call threads "bullets" or something. :)
