Do your part, try not to lurk!

Right now the user count Lemmys is comparatively tiny when held up against reddit - but the user count isn't the thing that makes a social media site, it's the engagement

So even if you're used to lurking, try to get a little more active! Post memes, vote on posts, talk in the comments, whatever!

If people come here and see activity, content, and discussions, they're more likely to stay and contribute their own - if they come and see a ghost town, they'll just go back to reddit

Wack0wizard,

Lemmy reminds me of reddit is fun

Tythonis,

Silly question maybe. How do I search for other servers to join when in an app? Is it possible? I’m using memmy for iPhone.

JuicyGyri,

Not silly, I think there are a lot of us on a learning curve here, I can't help, but I can comment to practice doing so and see if I get notifications if anyone does answer you. I'm using the jerboa app though, for Android! Good luck!

Anyone know if there is an app to use for IOS? I’m trying Mlem and I do like where they are going with the app it just bums me out how often it crashes. Also, I hope the influx of ex-Redditors really helps Lemmy and the Fediverse take off.

clen15,

So far iv been using a lemmy.world safari shortcut with a bit of Mlem here and there. I’ve been finding it hard to explore and find new communities through mlem with a few crashes here and there so use the website for that but it will take time and I’m sure Mlem will get there, it’s already a really nice interface and app to use just needs some additional features.

Thanks! I think I might actually like it more than Mlem. The ability to swipe to upvote is a really nice QoL feature.

someguy3,

The mobile web site is not bad.

The main thing I don’t like with the website is you can’t collapse responses. Or if there is a way I missed how to do it which is totally possible.

someguy3,

There's a little minus box to the right of the user name. But for Android I think I prefer jerboa.

You are amazing. I feel silly for not noticing that.

I was a Redditor for years and rarely posted anything and only sometimes commented. Predominantly a lurker but I have been doing my best to comment here the last few days, more than I have in the last 6 months on Reddit and feel less judged for comments. Reminds me of the early days of Reddit when things were simpler. Ah… very much a Pepperidge Farm remembers moment.

operable0082,

Always a bad sign when one of the top comments is trying to compel users to engage.

problem_chimp,

Using the jeroboa app rn and it’s fairly intuitive.

paralyze5307,

I think this will all be short lived and sadly most everyone will go back to reddit

akvomelono,

maybe! but maybe it won't :)

Alright... this marks the end of my lurking lifestyle then, I guess ¯\(ツ)/¯

speck,

I suspect the convos with the most activity in the next few days will be the ones about how to use Lemmy et al

gmatkins,

I'd like to know more.

nwithan8,

Same problem Mastodon had, the content consumers joined, but the content creators didn't, so there was nothing on the platform to engage with.

And let's be real, Lemmy is going to face the same fate when inevitably the Reddit protest ends in a couple days and everyone goes back to Reddit. Reddit is going to survive.

arne,

I think a massive difference between Twitter and Reddit is that Reddit isn't very user-centric. It's not about building a "personal brand" or amassing individual followings.

That's why I believe a decentralized Reddit clone (akin to Lemmy) has a much larger chance of thriving.

MyNameIsSkittles,

Reddit will die when the 3rd party apps go dark. So just wait, everyone will be back on the 1st

Cyclonus,

Was lurking on Reddit for 10 years, made just 9 comments that whole time; when there's so much noise you don't feel you have much to add to the conversation. But us lurkers have a chance to be heard in a growing community and help shape it in some way, gotta get out of my comfort zone I guess.

LondonPilot,

I often found that on the bigger subs on Reddit. The smaller subs is where I liked to make myself heard. Lemmy, right now, looks to be a similar size to some of those subs, so hopefully it should be a great place!

PS - this is my first post here!

forkspez,

But lurking is my natural habitat.

krdo,

Same.

dusk,

same

Veritrax,

I'm confused by Lemmy but also excited to try and help it grow.

Raiden11X,

Me too. It feels like early reddit stages trying to figure out what subreddits and whatnot are as a newcomer. I'm slowly getting the hang of it. The jerboa app has been cool too!

speck,

Is that an app to log in to Lemmy instead of using a browser?

player1,

Jerboa supposedly. I haven’t tried it yet though.

nublug,

i'm using it. it's... ok. not very many features (no way to sort comments, community search doesn't seem to work for me at all, links to communities open with a browser and not within the app, and while pictures show up in posts if you want to save or zoom you open in a browser) but it mostly gets the basic job done.

i need to pin the website to my home screen so i can use that for a comparison; i don't know what i'm missing. mastodon apps are in a similar situation of being a bit behind what the web version is capable of so i imagine that's probably the best way to use lemmy for a while, too.

edit: update. tried the 'install' thing on firefox and it's garbage. now i see what some posts complaining about auto updating with new posts mean and it makes me log in again every time i open it. sticking with jerboa for now. really hoping boost and/or joey reddit app devs make a version for lemmy soon.

gmatkins,

I'm on Jerboa right now. It's minimal and not particularly attractive, but all the necessary features are here.

It's clearly a passion project for a very small number of developers. I haven't seen any evidence of monetization but I'll happily give these folks a few bucks when I can. I paid for RiF and got a solid decade out of that.
