Manga Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion Thread [Week 17]

Previous Thread | Next Thread

Did you know that lemmy.world users can’t see this post at the moment? It’s true! So, those of us from other instances can say whatever we want about them! Now’s your chance!

Anyway…it’s time for another general thread. So, please use this thread for any questions, updates, recommendations, etc. you might have that you want to share.

Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).

Rayspekt,

Hey all

I am part of a young garage rock band named Jamalura that is currently looking for someone to do an artwork for our first album. We would like something like a manga panel for which we already have a specific idea that we like someone to draw for us.

The artstyle should look dramatic and sincere. I was thinking maybe about a more realistic style with strong focus on heavy shading.

Does anybody know where I can get in contact with artist that might be able to do this for us?

Thade780,

Pretty sure you can contact someone on DeviantArt.

wjs018,

Hey all, there are some federation delays for users on lemmy.world. This means that anything a world user does takes ~8 hours to federate over and be seen by any non-world users in the community. This includes posts, comments, votes, etc. Meanwhile, content from non-world users federate to lemmy.world promptly without delay. This has led to a kind of unusual situation to say the least.

The effects of this mean that you might see duplicated posts in which one is posted by a world user and another by a non-world user. Normally, in the case of duplicate posts, I would remove whichever one was posted later. However, in the situation where a world user creates a post, and then a non-world user makes that same post in the window before the first post has federated over, then I will leave both up. I am open to feedback on this though.

As for a resolution to the federation delays, it might be tough. From talking with hitagi, it seems that ani.social is currently in a similar situation to the lemmy servers located in AU/NZ in which we are latency limited and barely able to keep up with lemmy.world’s activity generation rate. If you want technical details, you can see the github issue here.

This hasn’t been a problem until recently though, so it is reasonable to ask what changed. Well, after talking with hitagi, it seems like the likely culprit is an undersea cable outage (see here). So, there isn’t too much that can be done short of moving ani.social’s infrastructure to a different region, closer to world’s server in Finland. There has been work done on the lemmy codebase to engineer out this latency sensitivity, but there isn’t yet a timeline for the 19.4 release.

wjs018,

Psst…come here…did you know that lemmy.world users prefer when scanlators use comic sans? It’s true!
