Banning it is a good start.

No it isn't, banning its data practices is.
Banning tiktok is a start and a stop because China takes the ire with their ball as they the both go home and everyone gets so tired booing their bon voyage they're too tukckered to notice zuck and andy doing the exact same acts of facts extraction.

Tarcion,

Not to scrutinize a meme, but can you point to text of this bill which would support what it is implying? Legimiately curious because fuck TikTok, but those changes would certainly give me pause.

Here you go.

This is obviously government overreach, regardless of how you feel about the platform. You can see that the bill is not just about Tik Tok and can and will easily be abused by our government. For that, I’d ask you to read up on things like McCarthyism and the Patriot Act. This is more of the same.

Whatisawaffle,

Unless I'm mistaken, you just linked the entire bill, which is a little lengthy and dense with legalese to sift through easily. Could you quote the part, or direct to the section that lets them censor and shut off all of your internet data and devices without you knowing?

Hello_there,

I think of is spreading bullshit or is misreading. From a quick skim the only effect is to enforce divestiture of a company under control of a foreign adversary. If it's not owned by them, no problem. If they divest, no problem.
Imo, yes. If China can decide to activate a bunch of 0-days hidden in routers, cameras, apps, etc., or can give the threat of doing so, that's a big problem.

Tarcion,

I’m quite familiar with both, thanks. Just looking for clarification on this particular bill. Thanks for the link.

The poster of this image is misleading at best.

The intelligence agency has never missed a tragedy to exploit, regardless of the cause. Viewers of tiktok are inherently younger, more likely to be outside the US, more open to informational sources in support of Palestine.

I promise you, not a single person pushing this ban through currently is doing so out of any modicum of support for either side. And any claims to such end were an afterthought. The intelligence agencies, their financial benefactors, and lawmakers behind it are only seeking to expand their powers. If Israel and Palestine were out back sucking each other off right now, then we’d be hearing some excuse involving Ukraine, or hell, maybe we’d come out and point at China directly.
