@stux I'm starting to think Microsoft doesn't actually care if their OS works - after all, if it's busted you're supposed to buy another Windows license haha
@stux Windows entire software update system is a total mess.
Windows Update, Windows Update for anything else than Windows itself, Drivers over Windows Update, Edge has its own updater, Microsoft Store runs updates, then dozends of third parties that have updaters running in the background 24/7 and so on and so on.....
Linux always did this way better with package managers but even there we now got Snaps, Flatpaks, AppImages, Packages, Web apps......
@stux For some definition of "if stuff works." Unfortunately, in a security context, some of the worst exploits do their damage while stuff seems to be "working". So, yeah, bad design.
@stux it's a good while since I last dared try it, but often as not a driver update via Windows Update would render your display adapter, network card or wireless adapter inoperable, possibly with no easy rollback option beyond 'boot into recovery mode and manually install the correct driver from there' (even more fun if it's a work device!). I think things have improved somewhat with Windows 10 and beyond, but I remain scarred and wary from past experience...
@stux drivers are normally for a whole family of devices. The new driver might just be adding more devices. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.... unless it's a security patch!
